Hey everyone, ==Me== here.
Thanks to school I've returned to the "starving gamer" financial situation. I'm not complaining, school is great, but I'm no longer able to run out and drop 100 bucks per week on ==My== plastic addiction. And of course this change occurred right before the DE book came out so I've got to budget out purchases for them and Space Marines and even Daemons if I can.
So, ==My== question to you is, what's the best way to make a good sized DE army on the cheap?
I have the army book, 10 Corsairs, and Lokhir (love the model, not necessarily using him every game).
So far I've come up with this:
-Glad Riders (convert into Dark Riders)
-Cold One Knights (make a Noble and use extra dinos for chariots)
-HE chariot (replace lions with dinos and there we go)
But that seems a tad pricy and it leaves ==Me== with extra models I can't use unless I get more and I can't get a lot of the units I like (Executioners, Shades, Bolt Throwers).
I'm not all that experienced with the DE army yet but I think I want to run an aggressive army with a balance of magic, mobility, combat, and shooting. Themewise it's a young noble proving himself on his first real raid aboard the Tower of Blessed Dread, so I want the usual raiding units with a core of nobility like COKs and chariots. But I also like the magic and I don't know if 2 sorceresses, even level 2 could cut it, especially for dispelling.
So, LO, can you help ==Me== out?
I can only make recommendations based on the army book itself, as I have yet to buy the models. Basically, for aggressive style, you can look for the following:
Witch Elves (frenzied poisonous attacks? what's not to like)
Notice I didn't recommend putting in either the Black Guard or the Executioners. The reason for this is that they're expensive, money-wise. This is true for Witch Elves as well, but the number of poisonous attacks you can dish out with them is very nice, and if you put in a converted Malus alongside the CoK and let him frenzy with his unit of CoK at the right time, you are bound to have some fun in the enemy lines.
Black Guard is nice, but the vanilla version of it is just an anvil unit, and for that purpose, you can use basic spear warriors. They won't last much, but if you combine charges well you won't suffer protracted combat and you'll either kill or break the unit you're set against. Plus, warriors are way cheaper than Guard.
For the real aggressive stuff, here's the deal - corsairs with two attacks per model, frenzied witch elves (possibly alongside CoK), assasin(s) popping up and dishing amazing number of attacks, Dark Riders redirecting and march-blocking and eating away at forces from distance. Unlike others, I don't think Dark Riders are all that necessary, you can easily substitute them with Harpies and Shades, but if you convert from Glade Riders, you'll have them really cheap.
Finally, an RBT or two. This will allow you to eat up on enemy forces and provide distraction if you need to reorganize your next charge. No Hydra, as she would lack the support necessary for her to make the day.
Consider sticking a sorceress in a unit of spears and killing off your own units for the extra spellcasting power. Spears are cheap, and the boost is useful.
I wouldn't bother with chariots. Conversion takes too much time and isn't exactly cheap either.
I'd suggest 2 Batallion boxes - you can't go wrong with these, they're excellent value for what you get. Then pick the remaining things and I believe you're all set. My 0.02$.

I'm sure that the extra models will go down a treat on EBAY - I saw the HE White lions go for $8 each!! So you might be able to amortise your costs, especially if you buy from discount stores online like Warstore or others
I plan an army of:
Sorceress on pegasus
sorceress on steed x 2
BSB on CO
5 Dark riders x4 (converted with glade guard)
I think when I added it up it was about £120, which isn't too bad!
of course realistically it should have a hydra in it, but I don't like the model.
<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE</div><div class='quotemain'>i know, in todays world, the weak are protected, so evolution is now non-existant for humans. To keep the race moving forwards, there should be tests to see if you are good enough to have kids- k-tana</div>
That sounds nasty, but I'm a big fan of Corsairs and Lokhir so I want to include them as well.
Here's what I thought up recently
Supreme Sorc w/ Pendant, Familiar, level 4
level 2 Sorc on dark steed with scroll and darkstar cloak
Lokhir or Master on CO
Big unit of Corsairs for the Supreme Sorc and an Assassin
Smaller unit of Corsairs to support or Spearmen
2 Bolt Throwers or a Hydra
That came up to 1 Batallion, 2 boxes of GR, a Sorc, a box of COKs, 2 BTs and some Warriors for converting. Adds up to around $300 and leaves a lot of spares to work on for later.
Any ideas on how to trim the fat and make a 2k point list that features Corsairs and Dark Riders (a raiding theme) for cheap?
if u want to make som shades, you can do what im going to (today?)
im gonna use the glade guard models. their bodies(mostly the ones without arms), the legs, and clothed heads. this way the models will look covered in clothing like we all want them to ;D
then i'll take the handbows from the corsairs and use as repeater xbows and the swords from corsairs too (if i dont have enought im going to use spearmen champion sword arms if they fit in size)
maybe some of the heads can be without hoods, but with loose hair (corsairs again)
the cloaks will have to be filed, so that the branches/leaves are gone, and using the quivers to hold great weapon beneath the shafts. (by removing the arrows)..
from the spare parts ill make an assassin from corsair legs(with the motionish pose) and glade guard torsoe. and some daggers from corsairs too. the head will be from glade guards too. the cloak will be from glade guards too, but i will try to find the most assassin-like i can find
I recommend getting a unit of shades because they are a good units and they can take down strong monster as well as shoot down lots of easy guys in units and you only need to spen 33 and thats all but if you want more i would recommend 8 thats about 50 bucks for a awesome unit and you can kill lots of stuff
By the way how do you convert glade riders into dark riders? I would definity recommend them?
please tell me i really need some...
