Hi, I just picked up a DE battalion (pretty new to fantasy) and I'm looking forward to starting up an army, but I need some help in how to customize my troops. My main opponent plays Daemons and Skaven, but I still want this to be a well-rounded army. I was thinking I need a good amount of crossbowman, but how many is a good amount and the same goes for the warriors? Also, what should my next purchase be? From reading through the forum, it seems like Dark Riders are weapons of choice. Any advice would be great. Thanks!
DE, Skaven, and Daemons, all the armies I play. You and your friend have great taste
A Battalion is a great start for your army. For equipment, I'd give the Corsairs 2 hand weapons as they'll perform better in combat and handbows have too short a range. For the Warriors, a mix of spears and crossbows are always good. I'd pick up another box of Warriors and make up 20 Spearelves and 24 crossbowmen (split into 2 units of 12). That gives you a nice block of cheap SCR and 2 cheap ranged units.
And Dark Riders are that awesome, but it's tricky to get a lot without converting or shelling out a ton for metal minis. Check eBay or convert from Wood Elf Glade Riders for best results.

Sorry, just wanted to clairify. Took me a few weeks to figure out what 1/2 the common abbriviations ment. Still trying to figure some out.
For me the hero choice has always been easy. Dark Elves are the only army that can take a flying monstrous creature as a mount for a hero. Manticore all the way. And don't limit you conversion options either. I created a "Northern Sea Dragon" with an extra cold one head and a zombie dragon miniature from the vampire counts range. Just make sure it doen't look as large or devisateing as a full scale dragon so there is not any confusion.
My hero doesn't always get into combat, but he can force you opponent to make some very bad manuvers by stareing at the rear of their most expenceive unit's rear the whole game.
Remember it is unit strenght 5!. The magic number. That means it CAN win combat if by chance it gets a rear charge. In this case charge a model on the corner. that way you win combat by 2 if you only cause one wound, and they get no attacks back. (unless you are fighting multi-wound models.)
My equipment set up: Hero, Manticore, Armor of darkness, halbred.
What it can do: March Block, Cause Terror, Give another unit a flank charge, kill skirmshers, kill war machines.
What it can't do: beat any decent unit head on, suvive very much shooting or magic. enter buildings.
Cutting tools + greenstuff + warriors + halbred tops from a box of Empire "state troops" = a dirt cheap unit of black guard. They also break less and rank up better than the regular metal models. add a magent on the tip of their staff, and you also have 20 6pt warriors. Don't get me wrong, Crossbow men with sheilds are great! But personally I would just use the 2 units of 10 corairs you have for the core requirement.
Welcome to Dark Elves!
Well I don't have much but I would say make sure you have at least one sorceress for your magic/magic def, use the warrior boxes to make some nice crossbowmen and spear men...(more crossbows than spearmen maybe all crossbows in my opinion) pick up some Black guard they are nasty in CC and are arguably our best infantry. For Rare I recommend Bolt Throwers over Hydra, Bolt Throwers come first, to good to resist.
Now for your Dark Riders I'd say do some simple and quick conversions from Glade Riders by throwing in some warrior body and head bits here and there, paint them up nice and black and poof! you got insta Dark Riders for cheaper than metal and they're plastic too
Hope this helpedUm dude... we arn't the only race that can take big flying beasties as mounts for heros... you might wanna look into it.Dark Elves are the only army that can take a flying monstrous creature as a mount for a hero
I thought I was smart, but apparently people don't like to take advice from beggars.
High Elves get the Dragon Mage, but I cant recall any others at the moment.
As for your hero's. I find that a master and a sorceress are good for 1k points.
Dark Elves can make a cheap master that can get a 1+ armor save and the pendant of kaeleth for a very tough hero, and a sorceress with the sacrificial knife or the darkstar cloak can dominate the magic phase by herself at 1000 pts.

"I am the architect of fate!"
Here is my suggestion to go for a thousand points using what you have and little else. All you have to buy is the sorceress, a noble on a cold one and a box of warriors.
-Cold one, heavy armor, lance
X18 Corsairs (6x3 formation)
full command, 2nd hand weapon
-(sorceress goes here) shields, full command
X5 Cold Ones
Joe Peshi (lone wolf) kill tally:Lash Sorcerer, Ghazkull, Yriel, Termi Libby, Vulkan.
