Does anyone use Cauldron of Blood setups at all?
I've been messing about on Army Builder, and just can't come up with a balanced, good value for points setup that includes it.
Compared to the Chaos Warshrine, it's just gimped!
I love the CoB, it is a huge benefit to the army and really adds a lot of options. I've had difficulty including it though, what with the high price tag.
I keep it as cheap as possible, maybe opting for Manbane if anything. After that, build a list that benefits most from it. MSU Executioners can do serious damage with bonus attacks or ward saves, or you can use them to hold the enemy in place with stubborn Ld8. Killing Blow on Witch Elves or Corsairs is great, bonus attacks on BG or COKs is always nice. It really adds a lot to an army.
What sorts of things were you running before?
Check out ==My== blog: www.bnhblog.blogspot.com
yeah, I've just added that and a 2nd RBT to my list, so I've had to scale back some of my troops. I've heard that they make the army a lot tougher. Everyone I know runs them naked, but I've considered the manbane poison in case I got charged by something tough.
My main problem is that I feel that I have no troops. After Hydra +2 RBTs and my compulsary 2x Dark riders units and 1 big unit of spears, I've got points for 2 special units and a bunch of characters. I may have to drop one of my characters to get another big unit of troops (should I get crazy enough to build and paint them)
I use the cauldron with a bare bones Hag, If you do use it, then you'll definatly have alot less troops as its cost is the price of a good size unit of warriors.
Ive converted my Cauldron (though its not complete) as I wanted to include it since it fits my army theme.
I would say its not the best value for points unless you really build a army around it, you need use units like CoK's, Execs, Witch Elves, Corsairs, BG or a hydra to get full use of its "buffs".
Try this out for you Cauldron setup.
Take Crone Hellborn as your general. Yes its a good bit of points but trust me it will even out. With her in the army which elves are core units. Take as big a unit as you can of them. If you have enough to go 6 across and 4 ranks deep I think it would be best. Put her in the which elves unit for challenges. With her magic weapons it will make short work against ememies in a challenge seeing that all wounds are resolved at strength 10, and her parrying blade will subtract 1 attack from the enemy in a challenge. (not to mention she already has whichbrew, rhune of khaine, and cry of war out of the gifts of Khain)
Now since you have her and the which elves, thats one less core unit selection you need to pay for. Im using the logic that it would be dumb to not take whichelves if your using a CoB.
For your other core selection(s) i will leave that to your own strategy. Go cheap with warriors or go attacks with corsairs, or maybe a few dark riders. I would go for corsairs personally. And if you need a third choice in a higher point game then get you a small unit of dark riders to annoy them with your fast cavalry.
Definitely take a full unit of Exocutioners since they are Khainite. If I have the points available I like to put a battle standard bearer with a great weapon and give that unit the always strike first banner.
Of course get the CoB on the board with the death hag obviously. Don't wast any points beefing the death hag up. Now, since everthing is kind of point heavy with the expensive General and somewhat pricy CoB, we are not going to take any Cold one Knights since they are REALLY expensive. That should balance a lot out price wise and since the CoB setup should be a troop force, it only makes sense to leave the CoK's out. Now, with the left over points go ahead and get the rare choices, 2 bolt throwers and a Hydra. They along one other troop force like a unit of black guard will go on the opposite side of the table than where you will keep your CoB/Which elves/executioners at. You want those three together though obviously.
Thats just a few tips I have. It's not an added up list, so you will have to work out any points left to spend on your own. Laterz.
I think that CoBs can actually be pretty useful, though I'm still pretty new to WHFB in general. I take one in my 'competitive' 2250 list, and usually just use it to keep my 2x5 BG unit alive until I can get into combat, where the killing blow or +1A can really decimate an enemy. I usually put the BSB on the Hag to give the BG a reroll just in case.
Another thing I've noticed it works well with is giving COKs +1A. In a bigger game you could give the COKs a hydra banner, so that when you charge, every COK gets 3 attacks w/ a reroll... thats 15 S6 lance attacks on the charge with a reroll to hit, not to mention the (is it 2 or 3?) attacks the Cold Ones get. This is also not including the Master's attacks. All said, 20 S6 attacks and 12-16 S4 attacks w/ a reroll can be pretty devastating.
Still, CoB has helped me out tremendously so far, I like it a lot.
It would be 3 S4 attacks for the cold ones.
And since I used a CoB about a month back I have yet to do a battle without it. To me the buffs that you get from it far outweigh the cost of it. Plus its a sweet model.
Anyone ever use the 5+ save though? Seems kinda worthless to me compared to the other choices..
Well im just starting into warhammer fantasy, and it seems that the 5+ ward save would be good until you can get into combat, becuase as far as i see witches dont have any save at all so drop like flies, this will help them actualy get to thier target
That 5+ wards save is Gold in the first and perhaps second round if you are fighting against somebody with Cannons or other ranged nasties.
I would not want to go without it :-)
When I was your age Pluto was a planet and Wraithlords had D-cannons! Ah, the good old days!
I just recently tried the CoB for the first time in a 2250 game against VC, and well I lost, but I actually liked the cauldron, Giving my unit of WE,s +1 attack made them pretty nasty and it helped in other regions too. I didnt give the Death Hag any gifts and her and the two hags still did well when they were charged, not saying they always will and my case was probably good rolling but it wasn't too bad, idk my verdict for the CoB is I like it and dont think its too terribly expensive, so I say try it out, why not
