... is that they seem insanely over powered for their points cost!!
I'm going to be fighting a Lizardman army this week with a 1,000pt cap on each side. He's let slip that he's going to be using 3 salamanders in this army and explained that they don't need to roll to hit - they just pick their target and roll an artillary dice to see how many str(x) unsavable hits that unit takes.
Is this the case? Does he not have to roll to hit? If that's true then the Ring of Darkness would have no effect. I intend to take a unit of Shades with GW hiding an assassin with AHW, Rune of Khaine and Cloak of Twilight to try and kill the little pests off but does anyone have good anti-lizardman tactics they'd care to share??
Sallies don't roll to hit, so be vewwy careful with them. They do have a fairly short range and they aren't exactly beastly in combat so GW shades should have no problems with them. Chillwind would be perfect.
Go after his skinks with Dark Riders, Shades and the like to keep him from harassing your blocks. Outmaneuver his Saurus, pepper them with arrows/bolts, and do the usual combined charges from the flanks/rear to see them off.

for right now the Sallys are tough. Not rolling to hit is one of the things that makes both them and Skaven ratteling guns such a pain. The new lizard men book is comming out in a few months when we'll see them shooting flame templates and having to roll to hit with the razordons. Till then I cant rember off the top of my head but I dont think they can stand and shoot as a charge reaction so hit them with something fast.
They might also misfire and eat their skink handlers.
Sallies are a big pain, and im yet to see a lizzie army without a unit of at least 2 sallies. I play WE aswell and these things are the worst. You just have to either shoot them (where the shots are randomised between the skinks and sallies) or get into combat with them.
If your using your hydra definatly try not to take it near those things.
Just on the shooting them idea,
I would have to check, but from memory they dont like it when they haven't got any handlers, i would just shoot the handlers down. I know hits are randomised but it shouldnt take to many to get them as they are fairly squishy.
Otherwise, i agree with chaospantz, charge them and munch them,
Before you judge a man, walk a mile in his shoes. After that, who cares, your a mile away and you have his shoes!!

Any type of ranked unit charging them will beat them in CC. I would be more cautious with shades and harpies though. The sallies are S5 T4 which could give harpies fits and if he rolls good might have your shades to weakened to win combat. The best way to deal with them imo is to keep chillwinding them. They are the best target for that spell and if you have decent magic, and he isnt running a slaan you should be controlling the magic phases.

Thanks for all the tips guys. I had my first battle against the dreaded lizardman army over Christmas - It was a 2 vs 2 (High Elves & Lizardmen vs Dark Elves (me) and Goblins) with 1,000 points per army.
As it happened, the salamanders belched one volley at my goblin allies, misfired, ate half their handlers and failed thewir panic test befpre fleeing off the board. So much for the worry! Unfortunately, as things turned out, the forces of darkness were still narrowly defeated when the High Elf player took a dragon mage and landed it in the middle of the Goblin army, causing the entire green mass to run for the hills!
