hey guys I am about to finish up my high elf army and was looking for another army to get into I really like the look of the dark elves and just elves in general and was wondering what to buy to start making a more defensive based dark elf army. I was looking around the army book and noticed dark elves have quite a few options (witchbrew, banner of nagarythe, asf banner, blackguard, cauldron of blood, cheap spearmen etc.) and was looking for some guidance.
Defensive Dark Elves could definitely work. I would think an army based on a block of spearmen, some Black Guard, and plenty of Crossbowmen and Bolt Throwers to thin enemy ranks would work pretty well. Add in Shades to go after war machines and march block (harpies for this too and screening) and some assassins to surprise would be assaulters and you should have a solid set up.
the problem is I dont know what direction to go with it a more khanite heavy list using a cauldron (to make most of the army stubborn and give those nifty lil abilities) or using alot of blackguard/spearmen or a mix of both. Then theirs hero selection and I dont know what would be the best either to go magic heavy or magic defense with strong fighters? I want the army to be fun but also would like to win a few games at least every now and then lol.
Either way works really. When I think defensive I think lots of RxBs, Bolt Throwers, Shades and Dark Riders with spearmen and Black Guard to anchor the line. Basically shoot the enemy to bits, mess them up with Dark Riders and Shades, and finish them off with your BG and spear blocks. Magic fits in very well here, as would the Cauldron.
I'm currently playing against WoC a LOT, and I find the best way of doing this is to work defensively.
This includes (in a 2k point army) 4 bolt throwers, 2 units dark riders and a unit of xbowmen, and then at least two casters. After that you can either go for a cauldron of blood and two units of executioners (one with BSB and ASF banner), or a solid unit of blackguard with asf banner.
Harpies are also great for delaying them getting in contact with you (i.e. more time for shootiing/spells), especially if any of the enemy units have frenzy.
I was thinking of doing something like this with magic/shooty and just hanging back then eventually close in with a wall.
1x 10 rxb
banner of cold blood
4 bolt throwers
Its a little over 2k but would something along these lines be a very fun defensive list that would also have a descent chance of winning?
Drop 2 BG for the Crimson Death and I think you're on to something.
thanks for the help ==me== but why not the soulrender its the same strength (because its a great weapon so +2 strength on foot) and ill be going first with the asf banner and getting an extra -1 on the armor rolls? another question is my asassin setup, would it be better to get rending stars in or maybe just get the handbow?
S5 vs S6 is the biggest difference here, go for the higher S.
Assassins look fine, rending stars aren't necessary but still quite good.
I used a defensive list against WoC at 1500pts worked quite well, massed shooting (20 xbowmen,2 bolt throwers and 6 shades) and magic (3 level 2s) to whittle him down then CoKs to smash his leftover forces.
Black Guard are good for defence, but i find their lower strength leaves them vunerable to heavy cavalry like chaos knights. I prefer taking executioners with a Hag BSB with ASF banner. 3 ranks of 7 can pretty much kill anything charging at you.
