well i want to expand my force but i cannot decide if i want WE or BG, and i sort of wanted to be fluffy and take a blood caldron with the WE but the BG seem to be more survivable.
on a side note, is the Blood Caldron worth the points/ is it good?
Witch Elves have T3 and no armor, that alone tends to get them overlooked. That said, they're relatively cheap and put out a ton of attacks with 2 hand weapons and frenzy, plus some gifts of khaine can help a lot (Witchbrew is great). Of course, for the same cost you can take Corsairs, who trade poison for armor and slavers, plus with the Sea Serpent Standard they get the same amount of attacks.
Black Guard are freaking amazing. High WS, high I, stubborn, 2A, Halberds, and access to the ASF Banner and Ring of Hotek or Null Talisman. Easily one of the best infantry units in the game and an awesome pick in any DE army.
Between the two, BG win hands down, but Witch Elves make for good support for a big block of BG.
The Cauldron is also awesome, it supports any style list (maybe not all mounted) and is a big benefit to your army beyond just the Khainites. The Death Hag and her two friends are not slouches in combat either. Black Guard w/ Killing Blow is a beautiful thing.

In all honesty, the Cauldron is the only way i can think that would make witchelves worth it. Give the hag of the unit the witchbrew, and with the Cauldron give them the 5+ ward. This will insure they have the same survivability before combat that the black guard have. When in combat, go either killing blow against infantry or heavy armor, or +1 atk against light armored/high T models. They also get stubburn like BG
Blackguard while good and amazing do not need the cauldron (all opinion) to survive and do well.
Even more deadly, but more expensive when they have a cauldron supporting them.
Any who, take both if you want to, if its an all infantry list, your gonna need some hitters if you dont have the cold one knights and chariots.
Darks Elves 6000ptsWood Elves 500pts (WIP)
Imperial Guard 5000pts
you're thinking like I am Malekith, I would love to do a witch elf army with a cauldron and 2 units of WitchElves or 2 caldrons and 2 witch elf units. Some dark riders and a lvl4 or something. They would be very vulnerable to shooting, but we get decent magic resistance/defense. the cauldrons and harpies would help with shooting minimalization.
But can you imagine getting a unit of 15-20 witch elves 6 wide with full command getting the charge off. With the cauldron you'd get a bazillion poison attacks with killing blow. The champion would get manbane or extra D3 attacks on her to stick it to big guys. Just thinking about rolling that many dice makes me giggle. (almost 20 attacks, if the cauldron gives you an extra attack, then 25+ attacks. )
knowing my dice, I'd probably still only get 1 wound which the enemy would save, but it still sounds fun. My problem is the models. Can anyone think of another model I could use instead of the witch elf models? I was thinking of Cat people from Wargods of the Aegyptus game, but even if painted well, I think they are a little risque' (98% naked cat chicks is too far for me) I can't seem to find a reasonable substitute and don't like the GW models.
I'd take Black Guard. They don't get shot at as often and when they do, they at least have an armour save. It's a royal pain shielding the Witch Elves, though on the attack they do more damage. and black guard are immune to pschology.
They're slightly more expensive, but overall the best choice, I feel. Plus, you can bolster them with a bigger and better banner than the Witch Elves' stats will allow. The witches do have +1 attack and poison, though.
The cauldron of blood, to counter malekith1337, is awesome. It doesn't need line of sight, it's WE are actually protected by a ward save and he fact 2/3 shots will hit the cauldron (to no effect) and the cauldron issues a whole host of murderous goodies (KB, +1 A, 5+ Ward) plus any of these again for the crew. But without it the witches are still awesome, just in need of a little protection.

I run both in my list's normally and tend too take the Witch Elves even if Im not running a cauldron, Most will say Witch Elves aren't worth taking without a cauldron and I say yes and no. I have seen my witch elves preform exceptionally without the cauldron due too 3 attacks each and poison and eternal hatred. Yes due too no save they can be an easy target for the enemy, but its up too you too make it not so. As for black guard, this unit has never let me down. I tend too run a unit of 15 witht the banner of Hag Graef and once again most will say no too a unit of only 15 and I say yes and no. Its nice too fut them in and get use the points from the missing 5 else where but it can be a hassle losing a rank. As I said the black guard have proven well for me every time and the Witch Elves have done well more so than not. So I would say either one is a good choice, it jsut depends on how you want too use the unit.
