Coming from 40k, I'm looking to start Fantasy soonish. I play Chaos Space Marines and am inclined towards Vampire Counts and Dark Elves, but I don't know which one to pick.
From your perspective, which army stands a better chance at winning. I ask this since what I usually hear is Vampire Counts getting rolled easily...
Both armies are quite competitive, easily some of the strongest lists out there.
DE are more about speed and combined arms, with each unit working to support the others. You have some solid uber units in the form of Black Guard and Dragons, plus a ton of extremely maneuverable and hit hard if a bit fragile.
VCs are about their characters with an army working around them. Characters raise the army and keep it going, but if they start dying things go south quickly. Psychology isn't a problem at all and the army is fairly easy to run as you just keep spamming invocation and grinding your enemy away through attrition. They've also got nasty units like Blood Knights, Black Knights, and Varghulfs to hit the enemy.
Either army is good, so pick the models or style of play you prefer.

I play VC and i must say they are far better on standards with daemons.
But saying this it completely depends on the list you take, its much easier to make a hard list with VC's than it is with DE
if an army that crumbles literally to dust at the loss of only a portion of it's characters could ever be considered hard
vc's are overrated you take out their soft squishy casters and the army is literally dust -even vampires are bait for spells or the good old chillblade
Believe in me, even if we are torn apart our feelings will unite us that is what this post is all about.
In 2k the Vamp Lord is anything but squishy, and because all of his spells nigh gaze of nagash require no line of sight that makes him perfect for a bunker unit if hes a caster.
Vamp Lords are truly anything but squishy, and its quite possible to win a game without him once hes dead youve just got to play preservative with the units you have.
But saying that VC are overrated is completely untrue, its not like in all the grand tournys them and daemons take up more than 1/2 of the top 10, And im sure they played people with the intelligence to try and target the vamp but had the inability to kill him.
dark elves are more fun. With a good VC list, you can basically dictate the magic and movement phases making it difficult to do much against. It is terribly easy to win, and overpower most lists with VC, even a moderate VC list. If all you want to do is win - play VC or demons. If you'd like to enjoy your games, I'd play DE, there is a lot more variety making it a much more enjoyable experience in my opinion.
But VC have the most variety in characters . But i still find VC really fun to play with
I have played most of the armies in WHFB. I enjoyed playing VCs but did not like the idea of not having one of the phases (shooting). I know that they make up for this in the other phases but it is still something to think about.
With DE you can change around the units of your list and get different feels which is harder to do with VC.
Both lists can be competative and fun.
Hope this helps in your decision.
If you are looking for a competitive, crush your opponent, army go with the VC. They are definitely top tier along with demons in the current environment(at least until players figure out how to deal with them.) DE are a different style. They are a fast, maneuvering army with a couple hard-hitting units. VC are more of a slow, unstoppable tide sweeping over the enemy. So if you are just looking to win now, go with VC as they are rock-hard and DE have a bit of a steeper learning curve. Otherwise, play the one that fits your style best.
Alisar what are you talking about. VC have the best shooting phase in the game. Well screaming phase. basically this is what ive managed to do with my screams.
5 wounds on a single treeman in one turn.
5 wounds on choas knights
another game with 4 wounds on chaos knights.
they havent really done anything else special as people are scared of them
But seriously id like to see something other than a cannon do that much damage on a single turn.
