I've just changed from 40k to fantasy and have chosen Dark Elves. At the moment I just no the basics of DE armies. I'll be against wood elves, skaven, empire most of the time. Here's an army list I whipped up. Mostly want to know what units to add from this. I have a Master and Battalion. Also unsure as to where I will put my characters.
Battle Standard Bearer, Pair of Repeater Handbows, Armour of Darkness, Soulrender. 161
Sorceress (Planning to Add)
Lvl 2, Darkstar Cloak, Dispel Scroll. 150
12 Warriors Full Command, Shields. 99
16 Crossbowman, Shields 176
20 Corsairs Full Command, Sea Serpent Standard. 250
Cold One Knights
5 Cold One Knights Full Command, Standard of Slaughter. 200
Black Guard (Planning to Add)
10 Black Guard Full Command, Banner of Murder. 190
Thinking about another 5 CoK's, Warrior box, Dreadlord w/ CoK
Armies: Dark Elves, Black Templars, Tyranids, Iron Warriors, Imperial Guard.
My suggestions would include, an assassin or two, a pair of Repeater Bolt Throwers, and some shades. You'll also want to look at the Banner of Hag Graef. As you scale up to 3000 You'll also want to pick up a hydra
The Camden Brigade

bolthrowers are nearly a must. Also you have a ring that is wonderful for magic defense. Cold one chariots and a hydra are two very good units. More warriors and more dark ones. Some people use an assasin and some do not. It seems to be a very good unit if played correctly.
Most of all, remember to have fun and choose the army which fits your style of play. What 40K armies do you play.
Remember that a BSB cannot be your general, so if you want Ld9 stick with the Master without the flag.
12 Warriors is too few, 16 RxBs is too much. The Battalion gives weird numbers, I'm not sure why. Another box of Warriors will be useful, giving you 1 unit of 24 spearmen and 2 units of 10 RxBs, or however you want to mix them up.
The Corsair unit is a bit big, 18 (6x3) is about as big as I'd make them. They don't need ranks as much as they need lots of attacks.
COKs are great.
The BG could be a bit bigger to shrug off casualties and get more attacks in. 14-18 is a good number, and the Banner of Hag Graef makes them exceptionally potent.
To expand, more COKs, a Dreadlord and Bolt Throwers all sound good. You may want something speedy, so Dark Riders, Harpies, or Shades would be a great benefit. Also, 1 caster isn't going to cut it for 2000 points, so another Sorceress is in order. Sacrificial Dagger is a good pick, as would the Seal of Ghrond and Tome of Furion.

I would put the master in the COK regiment as a normal hero.
One sorceress usually wont do any good. You would have about 6 POD after the power of darkness spel and would be able to do both your spells with 3 dice.BUT you would only have 3 dispel dice and against those cheap empire wizards and that wont do. Put darkstar cloak on one sorceress and the sacrificial dagger on the other. Then put her in a unit of 15 plain warriors which you should leave behind to guard your Reapers. Sacrifice them when you need to.
Reapers is a MUST!!!!
They are excelent to take three casulties on either glade guards, handgunners or crossbowmen and make them run.
I don't use repeater crossbowman myself but i figure they could work farly well against skaven causing alot of casulties and making them break.
Corsairs with the sea serpent standard is a must(16 attacks, muhahahaha).
I usually put a Ring of hotek or a null stone on my dread master and making my COK less fragile to magic.
And again, ALLWAYS field atleast two reapers while you play 1000pts+
