Just wandering, besides using Shadowblade to combat the Anvil of Doom, are there any other ways to combat it? I mean that attack it does on the ancient strike that can target up to 3 units of his choice is nasty. I am playing my dwarf army friend tonight and was wandering if there is something I can take that can help protect me from it or combat it. I don't think there is, but no harm in asking just in case I totally missed something. Since it's not magic it cannot be dispelled so I dunno what else I can do. I would like to not take Shadowblad since I want him to have fun and last time I took it he was pissed because he wasnt able to use it the whole game. I mean if there is nothing else I can do to combat it maybe ill just take him afterall but I dunno. Advice?
I would just use shades. In reviewing the rules for the anvil, it's a 50/50 roll whether or not it goes off, and it's only a d3 units. I know that "only" a d3 units still sounds like a lot, you could always build for more slightly smaller more numerous units.
You could always also try using a unit of Cold on Knights or Harpies. As another aside, shooting is divided only among the crew, that may be another option for you.
thats a good idea about the shooting... i can at least take out his crew pretty easily. but one thing is a matter with the whole it only strikes 50/50 thing. maybe normally sure, but there are two seperate characters he takes as the main character in the anvil of doom. i dont know their names but these two characters have rules that make them better choices for taking them with the anvil.. one of them always strikes a success on runes on a 2+ and strikes the ancient runes on a 3+... he always goes for the ancient and rarely misses lol. the other guy he can take (but has not yet) can re-roll any failed rolls on runes. bummer for me, good for him lol.
Theoreticly by turn 2 you should be hitting his charecter if you want to solid shot it with a RBT
i doubt he'd allow LoS on it though.
If your RBT and his Anvil are both on hills im pretty sure you can see it over units?
Does the anvil require LoS though? If it doesn't he won't be putting it on any hill!
There is a character that hits ancient runes on a 3+ and can reroll, its not very nice at all. I wrote an amusing list the other day (See Cold Knight in Hell post in army lists section) and that anvil, even rolling a 1 on d3 will beat it so bad! Its one of the strongest armies going, something about the anvil, char and LOTS of shooting. Don't know the list myself, just what I'm told by tournament players (been out of the game too long, trying to pick it back up). Apperently in the GT's at warhammer world Dark Elves are not finishing high at all, considering this book is a lot stronger than the last one, and I won a few tournaments with the previous book, I'm concerned, or curious as to how? O.o
I have never had a problen with vamps but apperently they are quite potent now, chaos is supposedly dominating and from what I've heard its really hard to make a bad daemon list lol. Is this the case everywhere or just in some tournament structures?
I hate making lists specifically to beat a certain type of army, I like them to be reliable and have good odds against anything. Is that a thing of the past?
There are a few wrong assumptions being made in this thread.
#1. Kill the Anvil crew with shooting.
-This is just plain silly for several reasons. The first being that the Anvil does not require Line of Sight to work...so what makes you think your ranged units will even be able to see the Anvil to shoot? A smart player will stick the Anvil behind terrain to deny LoS. The second reason shooting is silly is that the Anvil guards are basically Ironbreakers. Thats T4 with a +3 save vs shooting and all hits will be randomized between the Anvil (which can't be hurt) and the crew (which are hard to hurt). It would probably take 3 or 4 decent volleys of RBT shots just to start putting wounds on the Runelord who will probably have a +1 save and a ward save. (but again the RBT is unlikely because a smart player will hide the Anvil.
-This is semi-viable but it is going to need to be a fair sized unit with GW's to do the job. Again the fact the guards and lord are going to be sporting T4 +2 saves in combat is going to be hard for the Shades to beat. Also, if the Dwarf player has any sense at all the first time he strikes his anvil he is going to targeting that unit of Shades and likely wipe them out or break them before they even get a chance to charge.
Possible options not mentioned yet.
#1 A Master on a Steed with Sword of Might/HA/SDC/Shield/Pendant of Kaelith. It's not likely you'll win the fight but but he isn't going to be beating you either...and he can't hit the Anvil if he is in combat with your Master.
#2. Same setup as #1 but with a Dark Peggy. This will get you there faster but if he hits you with Wrath and puts a wound on the Peggy you'll be grounded.
#3. Assasin w/AHW, Manbane, Cloak of Twighlight. Slingshot him out of a unit of Shades for a turn one or two charge. You will need to bring enough magic to eat up the 7 to 8 DD dice the Dwarf player will likely have to make sure your Assasin can move unhindered.
#4. Master on a Manticore with the KB lance. Would rip the Anvil crew apart...if it survived a couple turns of Dwarf shooting.
The only honorable options left to we combatants is seppuku or semantics...which amount to the same thing really.
ive never played dwarfs so im just guessing here. I forgot about the LOS thing but i just presumed it would be on a hill behind a gun line, but that would make no sence so yea, your right
