Why is everyone giving Black Guard the ASF banner? Is it just so if they get charge they can still strike first or what? With an I6 it just seems like the 35 points could be spent elsewhere.
I6 means they go before most other units with ASF (all High Elves) and any associated characters do to.

Yes, that is exactly the reason. In my experience the BG unit is not the one charging but the one getting charged. It is used to accept the charge of your opponents unit and then spring the "I get to strike first anyway" on them. Although, because many people use this it is not much of a surprise anymore. But that is the thinking behind it. They take the charge of the opponents uber-unit and tie them up so that we can flank attack and destroy it next turn.Is it just so if they get charge they can still strike first or what?
not to mention by ensuring you attack first you could very possibly kill off their front rank and not allowing any counterattacks afterward which will keep your BG alive that much longer.
true, true. black guard are the only real elite unit that can stay in combat for a long period of time in my experience. So i guess having the ASF banner would help that out, especially on the charge.
I was just thinking people only liked this because they played against HE and it would counteract their ASF, but the banner only costs 35 points and it helps probably your most expensive unit on the board...yea makes sense now.
Except that now this is an "old" trick, it is unlikely to work that well, and most High Elf players will send in the faster I Phoenix Guard which are also much more resilient (and which cause Fear) against Black Guard rather than White Lions or Swordmasters. If you are playing most other enemies, Black Guards with ASF will cut up almost any enemy infantry unit, except perhaps the 2+ save Warriors of Chaos or Ironbreakers...

Well if they send some pheonix guard against our BG (which are immune to psychology) then they are definitely wasting that chance to auto-break another unit.
That is the way it goes. After about a month with a new book people learn to recognize the new combos. It just means your opponent won't be surprised, he still has to deal with it. Or you could switch it up and give them something else and let your opponent assume you have the "normal" kit. It could let you sneak it into another unit to give your opponent a surprise.Except that now this is an "old" trick, it is unlikely to work that well
give the BG the AP banner and exe the ASF banner (if your bsb was in that unit), that would change a few things up
