hey guys I was wondering if anyone had any experience using or playing against a magicless De list. I was thinking about fielding a cauldron list incorporating null talismans and the ring of hotek.
I have not had any experience with it but I would think you would have a very tough time against the one die spam lists such as VC, TK, and even Ogres. With only 2 DD and no scrolls it will be pretty much impossible to stop or even slow down their magic phase. You will also have trouble against lists that use magic mainly to support their own units as the Ring will not be in range right away. I think springing for one scroll caddy would greatly increase your effectiveness against magic. Your list will probably be quite fast so 3DD and 2 scrolls could shut down at least the first turn magic and part of the second. By then you should have the majority of your force in CC. I think you should try it both ways and see which works best for you. Good luck!! I like to see people thinking about different types of lists.
Dark Elves and Dark magic...it's a winning combination.
I've done it once or twice against my friends Dwarves and it worked out pretty well. And it usually takes a back seat for me cus I tend to have bad mojo with magic, but I usually field at least one lvl 2. But against a handful of armies I don't think it'd be a problem, definately make things interesting and mix it up.
well against dwarfs it would work as they have no magic anyway....
but its true if used against any othe ropponent evern with the ring etc your going to find it hard, i normally go with the rule of take at least 2 mages (for 1500 pts to about 2500). Other wise you lose out on a lot of abilities and will be mess about so much from there magic.
"Should take you a while though because of your sloth like pace"

I don't think he is looking for a tailored list against a specific opponent. I think that 7th edition has put enough emphasis on magic that trying to go totally without is going to be pretty difficult. Like I said, give it a shot and see what happens. You may find that it works for you against your circle of friends depending on what type of lists they play.I've done it once or twice against my friends Dwarves and it worked out pretty well
Vs Dwarfs (assuming they are not using an Anvil of Doom) and vs Khorne themed armies, it should work well.
You have access to one of the most ofensive lores in the game so by going without magic you are limiting yourself somewhat.
That said of all the armies that I have glanced through you have some of the best defensive items and hunters in the game, not only are they good items but they are not Arcane Items, so you can give them to a any character. Personally I would still take a couple of mages, your magic is just so good, but I think with some exerimentation and patience you might be able to come up with a list that worked. Facing heavy magic would always be an issue but that would be part of the challenge with a list like this.
A Noble on a Manticore or dark pegasus with Pendant of Khaleth + Sword of Might goes after any lord level mage, Give the seal of Ghrond to a Lord + a couple of other items Armour and Weapon I guess, Ring of Hotek to Cold One Champion and a noble or 2 with some Null Talismans. Dark Riders as your troops backed up by shades and Cold One Knights an RBT or 2, a Hydra maybe an assassin with shades if you feel lucky. The army would be that fast your enemy wouldn't know what to do their spells would mostly only get a turn or 2 to be effective then the mages would be dead, or combat joined.
This is all hypothetical of course and it would probably suffer at the hands of another low magic army as your nobles are less killy.
I think in the current gaming climate where magic is playing a big part especially with VCs you shld really take at least a scroll caddy most games. With DE you may as well have so magic there because it can be so destructive.
Yes it can. A single scroll caddy, Null Talismans, and the Ring of Hotek should be enough. Dark Magic is neat, but DE have a ton of other good options.
The best magic defense is smashing their casters with all the points you spent on fight units.
