I can find a use for almost any DE unit that I own. And while different occasions call for different units, I find that the troops that are usually left at home are my Witch Elves. For me these girls are just too vulnerable, being extremely fragile and almost completely dependent on the charge.
I imagine that there are uses for them that don't fit my play style, so I'd like to hear some of 'em. What do you guys use these girls for??
I love witch elves fluff, but i agree with you they are just to vulnerable. Corsairs are also 10pts, two handweapons, and you can even give them the frenzy banner, but they also have sea dragon cloaks so they can handle getting shot at. Plus there are far better things to fill your special slots with.
I love these chicks! I usually field them with cauldron but without they work just as well. I ussually field them 10 or 15 large.
front rank of 6 with champ and manbane = 19 poisoned attacks!
The purpose for this unit is to whack RNF low infantry. even 6 of these fellas can whoop a fully ranked unit.
They can be used with SCR but it will cost you 50pt per rank, and since you want wider front rank it will cost you even more per rank.
For added effect you can add the armour piercing banner.
I have every model in the DE range exept for these chicks. I never liked them but they dont attract too many attention but once I tried them I was hooked. Now I still have to buy them $$$
Some advantages over corsairs:
- POISON!! this helps out alot
- more attacks
- if you add sea serpent banner to corsairs you cant take another banner thus giving the witch evles an advantage
10 corsairs @ 150
additional handweapon, full command, sea serpent standard
3A WS4 S3 I5 - 5+ save
10 Witch Elves @ 150
full command, banner of murder
3A W4 S3 I6 armour piercing - no save
Same points and I think these units are equally matched when you look at them one has a save other has armour piercing. But when you have a cauldron the witch elves become stubborn and that's where you see the major difference. Stubborn is so nice! LD 10 with BSB around, you can set up some very nice anvils with these.

In warhammer, it all depends on whom you are fighting.
Vs the Skaven (which I used primarily), Witch Elves were to be feared and if you are going against them, whose shooting abillities are largely limited..
Basically you want to use Witch Elves vs Armies that don't have a lot of shooting (Skaven, Chaos jump to mind) that also have to come get you. In both cases, these two armies HAVE to close with the Dark Elves.
The Dark Elves, IMHO, are one army that largely depend on combined arms/units working in tandem to win.
From a skaven player standpoint, Witch Elves were amongst the most dreaded things in the Dark Elf army. To the point, that with whatever warmachines I did have along with magic, well, the Dark Elves are an army that have the Skaven's number and thus why I hate the DE so much because they have so many units that are truely LETHAL to the Skaven's success.
repeating bolt throwers....
Cold One Knights......
if my opponent KNEW they were going up against me you can be assured I would see all of the above in battle and it made building a good army list difficult.
I normally never take which elves for the reasons you have stated. However they can be good as a counter charge unit. Times i ahve used as a counter charge against something big they have chewed it up. So really it depends on what your fighting and your overall army and plan. Build an army aroud these girls or in combination can be devistating, stick them in as an extra there pointless and will die.

I have always used the witch elves in battle ( i like those women with almost nothing on ).
I tend to use them nowadays with the cauldron making them stubborn and giving them a 5+ward when not in combat and sometimes a extra attack when in combat.
The Hag is often equiped with a rune of khain and i use them 7 wide to chew up the enemy as quickly as possible.
In the 6th edition i used to have a unit of 20, it worked but it hurt whem people started shooting at them becous there was alot of points in that unit alone and its really vurnable.
If you have a smaller unit it tends to attract less attention and if it does its just about 150pts that you lose, with the cauldron giving them stubborn theres always some of them getting into combat.
However small number that gets into combat its always fun watching your oponents face when picking up all those attack dices
I mainly use them as a counter charge unit or try to outflank the opponent but sometimes they have to do as a speed bump or getting that hero with a high T in a challenge (poison FTW).
I dont think I would ever consider bringing more than 10 of these girls to a fight. A few more and they pose too big of a target. Few less and they wont get the job done.
I'm Newish (Started in 5th, stopped, now started again in 7th) so take this with a grain of salt:
They are one of the last models that I would buy. Rarely are they better than a similar unit while often they can be worse than similar units (corsairs, executioners, and black guards being the similar units, especially when you add similar equipment).
I think they are best for a very specific win strategy or for a themed army. They definitely deserve their spot in the army book.
I thought the two good uses for them that isn't commonly though of is against a charging army--I have not used them in this way. Otherwise non-shooting opponents make them useful.
It got much, MUCH worse for Skaven players if he actually knew he was specifically going up against the Skaven....
And it got even WORSE, WORSE, WORSER when he knew he was specifically going up against me personally.
That's why I consistently say that the Dark Elves were at least in 5th and 6th Edition warhammer, the bane of GM Joe Solarte, why I both hate and fear the Dark ones because even a novice players.....
I don't believe that not only did I ever win vs the Dark Elves, I don't think I even was ever close. I always seemed to have the wrong list, they always seemed to have the perfect list to counter EVERYTHING that I had, it was not funny.
So in truth, I don't think there is anything on the Dark Elves list that is not perfect for going up against the Skaven with.
