I am going up against dwarves in a 1000 point battle soon, and I have begun working on an army list.
Shooting and magic can really shine in small battles, and I am a bit nerveus about crossing 24' battlefield with such a small fragile army. Magic is out of the question against dwarves and I really cant compeat with their shooting.
How do I deal with them? Shades and harpies take out warmachines but what about crossbowmen or thunderers? I thought an assassin with rending stars and manbane would do well. Apart from that I am thinking of large cheap spearmen regiments led by characters with great weapons. I have a hydra to add in, but he could bring a bolt thrower with rune of fire for the sole purpose of killing it. Cold one knights could do well, but they are fragile and stupid. Dark riders are great, but just dont punch through tough dwarves.
What say you?
At 1000 points, you are not going to see a RuneLord or Anvil of Doom. maybe not even a runesmith. Yeah he has the extra two dispell dice.
I think magic would be one way to go if you go with a LOT of sorcerrers in your list. give them enough items to make them effective and yeah, that might work.
You only get 1 rare @1000 pts, right/ That means either 1 RbT or 1 War Hydra.
Because at 1000 points, the war machines that a dwarf player has will be limited, you can almost expect one souped up cannon to go after the war hydra, so I would go with a RBT instead.
DE can do 2 RBTs as a single rare. If you can find another 100 points, it may be worth taking that second one.
I'd go with the dual RBTs. High str & armor peircing/ignore would whittle away at his units very well. Plus dwarves are SLOW so it's pretty unlikely they'll ever take out the RBTs if you can tie up his artillery with harpies or riders. Don't take cold ones - too expensive at 1k. If you want specials take the black guard
Stick to fast units, range & RBTs
Dark Elf scouts are also worth taking. Their RXbows probably won't drop a Dwarf War machine crew, but if you can engage in CC ,that will neutralize their warmachine for as long as they can be tied up.
Sorceress w sac dagger
Sorceress w darkstart cloak and gem of infinite bleakness
Assassin w rending stars, manbane, cloak of shadows
10 crossbowmen w shields
20 spearmen w shields (sorceresses go here)
5 shades w great weapons
I really wanted to go dual rbt, but it just doesnt seem to be possible when you need at least 2 core units. What do you think?
Ditch the shields on the crossbows. If youre getting shot by handguns you wont get an armor save anyways and you shouldnt be in combat with them.
Drop the shades too for the other bolt thrower.
agree with Astynx. Drop the Shades, I might even drop the crossbowmen and Spearmen and go with two units of Corsairs instead.
Get the 2nd RBT.
With that, with Rxbow Corsairs you should get the similiar missle fire. Which means you can do what the black elves do best, which is stay back, whittle away and hit them when they are weakest.
Thanks for all your help
Okay I had to move some points around to get it to 1000 excactly. I am going to play against him on wednesday, so now is the time to make further suggestions. I tried to make room for the second rbt as you suggested:
Sorceress (level 2)
Sorceress (level 2)
Sacrificial Dagger, Pearl of Infinite Bleakness
Additional hand weapon
Rending Stars, Manbane, Cloak of Shadows
10 x Repeater Crossbowmen
20 x Warriors
5 x Harpies
2 x Reaper Bolt Thrower
Total: 1000 excactly
looks like it should be effective.
part of your armies effectiveness is going to be to attrit this guy as he advances on you which he almost has to do. so I might drop any magic items from my sorcerress that don't have to do with getting extra power dice or increasing their magic. If he does advance on you, you probably want the sorcerress out of harms way and to have them leave their units if they do close range.
In theory, vs Dark Elves, he should be coming with heavily armored dwarf warriors in his core; longbeards or iron breakers. He may take a small unit of slayers if he thinks you are going to bring a war hydra as a back up for his cannon in case something happens to it.
You can expect his war machines to be souped up too. so be ready for it.
