I run a list with a Dragon Dreadlord, 2 Sorceress, 1 20-unit of blackguard and corsairs, two 5-man dark riders, a 5-man unit of cold ones and two hydras. I was wondering if I should toss in some RxBmen and/or Spearmen and swithc out the Dreadlord on a Dragon for a Supreme Sorc for a more magic-heavy feel.
Or maybe just to add some variety... My question is about how many RxBmen should I get to have at least some range other than the dark riders and spells, and if Spearmen would be worth it. Some advice on units to switch around or to take out would also be very much appreciated. I also tend to run an Assassin but he rarely gets into combat (bad luck!).
Any advice on RxBmen and Spearmen would be greatly appreciated.
as always it depends on whom you are fighting.
I have run alot of lists with both spearmen and RxB, and more than a few times these units have been a deciding factor in my victory. I believe that any of these units will serve you better than corsairs, who are simply to pricy for their medicore abilities. Now a few comments on the two units as you requested:
After their recent performances, I am fielding at least 2x10 of them in every battle! They simply produce and astounding amount of shooting for only 200 points, which will cause HEAVY damage to almost everything, thanks to their AP abilety. However strong they are offensively, do NEVER engage in a shootout! They fall like flies, and quickly loose their effectiveness. I usually shield them with harpies and draw away the fire with some really nasty regiments, like CoK, characters on monsters or a hydra - something the opponent fears even more.
Well, some say that dark elves can only deal damage and do not have the numbers to take a beating? Spearmen is your answer. For such a low point cost, your opponent can shoot all they want to little or no effect. In close combat spearmen have a +5 static CR, which earned them the scalps of two treemen in my battles. I am still a bit mixed on them though - they just dont have the speed I like and often ends up getting outmanouvred. But if you need cheap combat ability, they will proberbly be a better choice than corsairs.
Hmm... 40 shots for 200 points sounds pretty good
