I plan on running a unit of 5 knights along with a master as the BSB. using the hydra banner. I know I'm going to have a dread knight with the sword of battle and blood armor, but don't know if I should use a musician or standard bearer. What do you think?
as always it depends on what you are up against.
If you are going up against an opponent whom in all likelihood, your COK's WILL make it to the enemy and make contact with them, then the Hydra Banner the dread knight should be taken, and chances are, so should the musician at least, maybe even a SB with some other magic banner. The idea being that if you are sure your unit can make it to engage the enemy, you need to maximize them.
if you are going up against an opponent where in all likelihood, a unit of 5 COK+the BSB are in all likelihood NOT going to make it to engage the enemy (vs a strong magic or missile or war machine army), then in all likelihood, you should NOT put the BSB there and should expect the unit to not make it to the enemy.
in #2's option, you need to consider other things that will draw fire away from them. War Hydra's seem to be a really good option.
That was supposed to be "cold" one knights. oops. Anyway, what I'm aiming for is a single list for any battle. Something that is competitive against anyone. Also, should I keep the magic armor on the dread knight, or give him some other kind of magic item?
Another oops. I can't afford both the weapon and armor on the dread knight. I'll probably just give him the sword of might.
yeah I figured that.
like I said, you got my two options.
You probably want to have either Harpies or Dark Riders if this unit is intended to be the anvil to their hammer.
If you plan on using this unit as a mobile hammer to a war hydra, then your unit listed should do OK.
Why invest so many resources into such a fragile, minimal unit? When I use the Hydra banner with COKs, it's usually a unit of 10 with full command and the Banner of Cold Blood as well. High-end banners and half-measures are a bad combination.I recommend only a null talisman. It's cheap and helps them reach combat without taking too many casualties from magic. Our unit champs aren't the ones to reliably win challenges.Originally Posted by Akruze
The army forums are a good place to find ideas for balanced lists. Is there a particular theme or tactics-focus you want, or are you planning first purchases, or do you have an army that isn't performing well?

I recommend not running that unit in any size. There is pretty much no way it can really kill its points worth of models, and it isn't that resilient to be useful for points denial. If you want to buff up CoKs, then take a unit of 5 with nothing on them and give them +1 attack from the cauldron of blood. That way your points investment is being used for something every turn.
I personally have run a list with 10 CoKs with full command 6 wide, with a potion of strenth hydra banner lord, and a hydra banner master backed up by a cauldron of blood. It ends up being 12 S4 cold one attacks, 12 s6 lance attacks from the knights, 5 S6 lance attacks from the master, and 7-9 S 7 (for one turn of potion use) from the dreadlord. The magic banner was the ASF banner, in case it gets charged. It destroyed whatever it touched, including a full 25 plague bearer unit with regen. The problem is that nobody who could avoid it let it hit anything important, and it never got to get its points back. Occasionally it would get hit by a spell that would just decimate it instantly. Really not worth putting tons of points in them TBH.
With the help of this along with another thread in the army list section I have decided what to do. I will have a unit of 5 with the dread knight with a null talisman. I will run my BSB master with the hydra banner with in this unit. Also, I will have another unit of 5 the same except with the deathpircer instead of the talisman, and no master included.
