Welcome to Librarium Online!
I have recently got back into Warhammer after years in the wilderness. I have started playing 40K using Eldar against my best mate who plays Space Marines and he mostly wins.....we are now moving to FB. He has chosen High Elves. I want to create a DE army of 2000pts to beat him and get revenge. Before I do the usual of buying all the models I can lay my hands, does anyone have any ideas, or at least a rough base to use and then adapt to counter what he brings to the field? I have spent hours reading the armybook and writing out lists but cannot decide......
HE armies usually don't feature much in the mobility department, with just a few chariots and/or a unit of knights. So one way to combat him is to stay a mobile force. Limit the number of foot units (doesn't mean all mounted, as that is an extreme army type subject to paper rock scissors meta gaming, balanced is better).
HE are T3 with poor armor saves and high cost units. Volume of fire can really wear on them. So a high volume of shooting is a good idea. But once again, don't go overboard.
HE have really good magic, but their native lore is balanced with a fair amount of utility and defense in it. DE lore is pure offense. So if you take magic, you should bring at least 8 dice to overwhelm his defenses, otherwise it is just going to do nothing.
HE have ASF on all their units. Good thing most of their unit's don't hit very hard right? Might be true of spears and archers, but not true of their other choices. DE have bad armor for the most part, even the S3 units will do serious damage to a DE unit before it gets to strike. So if you take a unit into combat against them, expect serious losses. The only combat units I would take against them, if I were to list tailor (which I don't, but this is good advice anyways) are BG set up to be ASF with a crimson death champ. (at I6, they strike first against most HE, and roll off against the elite ones), CoKs or chariots (esp chariots with impact hits coming before ASF), and a hydra or two (tough enough to get hit, hits hard enough to be worth it, cheap enough to take two).
HE have the ability to take dragons. They have the unique ability to take 2 at 2k. IF they do so, all of the tactics I laid out do nothing, as fighting a 2 dragon list is not like fighting a normal HE list. The only thing that matters is the dragons, all else including the guy riding them are chaff to be ignored. So if you know he is going to bring dragons, bring really heavy magic, 4 bolt throwers, and as many fast ranged units as possible. Assassins with rending stars and manbane work wonders esp in shades with GW units. (3 shots that hit on 2s and are S7 will take off wounds fast)
Notabot, thank you kindly for the advice I really appreciate that
