I'm pretty inexperienced at WFB, and haven't played latest edition yet. I'm expecting to take on a WoC army in a couple of weeks and am concerned by their high T, heavy armour and ferocity in close combat.
I'm after some opinions on whether I'm best holding off and trying to hit him with bolt throwers and supreme sorceress (poss Morathi), or spending the points on Cold One Knights and Black Guard supported by a large warriors unit.
In my view, a War Hydra is also a must if I am to stand any chance of actually hurting him when I do inevitably get into combat.
Let me know what you think...
What points level?
Take some Bolt throwers and Crossbowmen, you do need to sit back and soften them up at range. But dont take a 'gun-line' army.. As you said, you will inevitably get into combat, and therefore you need some decent combat units.
I massacred a good WoC footslogging list by using 2 RBTs, 10 crossbowmen and a level 2. Not much made it into combat, and what did was cut down by my spearmen and chariots. (1000 point game).

I'm playing 2000pts. Its good to know that the idea of softening them up works. I think that's enough to convince me that 2 Bolt Throwers and a Hydra will cover my Rare choices. Prob taking a supreme sorceress as well.
My own experience with WoC (and heavy infantry in general) is that the Lore of Metal is essential. Crossbows are wasted on heavy infantry; even with armor-piercing they can't do much and the lack of march blocking means you will have time for only a couple volleys before they hit. Better to target Marauders and such, and the basic Metal spell alone is phenomenally effective.
In last Edition I would have recommended Cold One Knights or exploiting frenzy to redirect the opponent. Now, my plan would be to give the WoC a brick of Elves to charge into and then side-charge them with COKs or a Hydra. I'm not so sure about Black Guard; while they will hold the line and do damage, they won't last long in a fight of attrition.

i would agree Lore of metal will just eat through most WoC units 9th warriors) while keep the RXB's for mauraders use the BT's to blast any larger units of any thing preferable the heavy stuff the hydra will make a great flank charger / assist to a large block of spears and dont forget for the most part you'll be straiking 1st as charges no longer give asf but they do give +1 CR the WoC has next to no shooting at all but his magic if he has it is not to be sniffed at he basicly gets same as us but with 3 lores of chaos Vs out dark magic over all we should take the mag phase and own it though
hope this helps and good luck
Anchor your center with a block of 30+ Spearmen with Full Comm, Master BsB coupled with the Banner of Murder. Run them 5 wide as to minimize the Chaos Warriors ability to hit you. You should stay steadfast dishing out 3 rows of AP'ing attacks each combat. I think the Spearmen can take the Banner on their own, so you can tool up the Master BsB to kill heavily armored troops. I don't use great weapons as it negates my high initiative. +1S sword, SDC, Shield, Regen Armor and maybe Dual Handbows (great if you have light troops or fliers messing with you. Also, a nice stand and shoot)
Position a Chariot to hit the flank of whatever your spearmen take on to their front.
IMO - Hydra, I try to get off the breath weapon BEFORE combat as the Template usually hits more models than the 2d6 in close combat. As the Chaos has little shooting he should be at 5 wounds meaning you will have a S5 breath weapon.
Lore of metal is a must versus WoC.
40K: Tyranid, Necron, Space Wolves
Fantasy: Dark Elves, Lizardmen, Orcs & Goblins, Dwarves
i take a unit of executioners with a master bsb with ASF banner to strike in I order. you will go through most warrior of chaos units and a lvl 4 with lore of metal will make them shake in there boots.
Thanks for the pointers. I'll come up with an army list in the next couple of days and post in the army list forum for critique. Sounds like Metal is the 'must have' lore against WoC, otherwise using shooting to soften them up before using the big guns (War Hydra) to smash them in combat...
