So, we're starting an escalation league at the club and I've decided this was a good excuse to get my dark elves painted. As we've decided to keep it low-powered I'm going for a cult of excess theme, which means no khainite unites (at least not in their pure form) or characters. Now, I'm debating what kind of character to bring. A sorceress or a noble? I'd love a sorceress but I'm not really sure she's worth it compared to a hero with an armour of darkness and crimson death
Depends what you want from your army. Near unrivalled offensive magic to support your troops? Take the sorceress. Tough character to bolster your units in combat and contribute towards CR? Take the Master.
Personally on the Master I'd take Heavy Armour, Shield, Sea Dragon Cloak, Sword of Might, Pendant of Khaeleth. Means he has a ward save, because if your Master comes up against something that ignores armour saves then the Armour of Darkness isn't gonna help much....
I must say that in this edition a BSB is a must, and because of that you would not be able to take a shield. In this case I would take a Master, make him a BSB, and give hime the Armour of Darkness. The rest is up to you, but that is how I would start him out. (I actually would leave him just like that because otherwise he is too many points).
Honor Among Brothers
Also, Magic is not really rewarding at low levels. A Sorceress has no CC prowess and is way too expensive for what she will do at this level. She is also easy kill points if she is in CC. (Games are won with units at this point level, not characters). Hope that helps.

Honor Among Brothers
On the BSB, I doubt I'll include one at 750pts. He can't be the general, so that means two very barebone characters. My first thoughts on a list is a character of some description, 2x 10 crossbowmen, 20 corsairs with SSS and musician and 6 shades with add hw. That's roughly 660pts, leaving me with 19. I might ditch the shades at this level though and get some COK and/or a chariot (haven't done the math on that yet)
(I even took lore of Fire to play it simple and fair instead of the more evil Lores like Life or Shadow, but what happened was that I destroyed 11 Executioners in the first turn and killed his Hydra (yes, he had a hydra at 750 ) later. Both with Fireball - the most lovely simple spell in the game)

[QUOTE=HAB_Iceman;1789144]That is a good point. However, in a low point game I do not forsee this happening. If they take a weapon that ignores armour saves, then they will have no defense items and since DE have great Initiative the Master should win the fight anyway.QUOTE]
Touché. You'd be surprised though...I wasn't thinking specifically weapons in challenges/combat I should mention. Anything that hits him at a Strength of 5 or higher will give him pause for thought, even with a 2+ save. And also War machines (with direct impact), Hellpit Abominations and such other things will almost certainly not care about his 2+ save. Oh, and Killing Blow. Worst-case scenario for that would be "Smiting" from Tomb Guard. In the magic phase, no chance to attack back. And if the Master survives that then they get to have another go in the combat phase.
BSBs are essential in games of 2K or more in 8th Ed. However in 1500 or less they become less essential, as you really need just a single character to be your General, some decent units, and a support character if you have the points spare. Then again, I had my Chariot-mounted Dreadlord and Lokhir Fellheart leading my 1500pt Corsair army.....hmmm......
Basically at the end of the day it's up to yourself, if you want to run with it, then run with it. No-one can tell you if it's right or wrong really.
i don't know if you have one or not but a War Hydra at 750 can really be a serious plus for you army, even though its expensive it can do some serious damage or if your fighting a shooty army with war machines they'll want to direct all of their fire at the hydra (unless they are a bit more cautious). this can allow your corsairs and other melee infantry to get close enough to make the charge or get into a good position to accept a charge without taking heavy loses from your opponents shooting phase. Also in the 750 game i played with my Hydra my opponent was just so scared of him he focused entirely on him and forgot about the Black Guard and the corsairs that were coming right up the flank at him. what ever you decide to do, Good Luck in the league and win some favor with the Witch King. =D
Well, we normally go for strong lists and have decided not to in this case, so hydra is out (my own choice) for lower point games.
I'm looking at something like this atm:
Sorceress level 2 (dark or fire) with tome of furion and pendant
2 x 10 xbowmen with musi
19 spearmen with musician, shields and banner of discipline
5 x CoK with musi
This leaves 40'ish points to play with. I'm thinking of droppping the shields on the spearmen and see if I can squeeze in some shades
An alternate list would include a master, some xbowmen, corsairs and probably some shades and CoK. Maybe a chariot if points allow it
As you may of guessed i suggest lore of shadow, making spearmen stronger, opponents weaker, or even making your enemies T1 before you shoot them to bits with crossbow elves is really effective.
