I have been playing DE and have been having problems with VC and LM. I was wondering if any one had any suggestions, or sample lists, when playing against these two armies. The vamp player loves to use Drakenoff (regenerate)banner, he always runs a Vargulf, and Blood knights.
This is what I have:
1x Beast Lord on Manticore
2x Bolt throwers
5x CoK (full command)
20x Corsairs (full command)
Any help is appreciated!
Blood for the Blood God
drop the manticore, against lizardmen it would be sad to see something like that die to skinks, drop one of the little sorceresses and try to fit a bsb. i dont know i play both lizardmen and dark elves and the lizardmen are a tough opponent, solid line infantry cold blooded and the slann temple guard bunkers never something you want to fight. you can try to beat them at combat, magic, or shooting, however the slann is amazing at magic, saurus will cut through most DE infantry, and shooting is almost wasted on saurus with t4 and a 4+ save. you could be that guy and take shadow against the lizardmen and take advantage of their low I, but things like wither, the enfeebling foe, and misma, can do alot against lizardmen so i would consider swapping morathi out for a level 4 shadow wizard with the sac dagger.
as for vamps ive never played against them so all i can suggest is CR them to death.. err.. re-death ?
CRing VC to re-death is like trying to drain the sea with a sieve. Not worth attempting. For a start, they tend to have bigger units than DE can muster, and they can just summon up more Zombies. If you get the Varghulf on it's lonesome you could beat it with CR, although the Blood Knights won't even realise there was a unit in front of them and just ride through it. I would suggest trying to tarpit them with a unit then flanking them with the Executioners, but there wouldn't be a tarpit there when the Executioners tried to flank. For the Blood Knights, Bolt-Thrower the hell out of them. The Banner of Eternal Flame would serve you well against the Drakenhof Banner (no Regen from Flaming Attacks) as well as the Hydra's Breath Weapon.
Focus on trying to kill off his characters, in particular Vampires and Necromancers. Without them, he can't raise any dead. Your troops are more than a match for his (with the exception of Blood Knights), as long as they aren't being resurrected every turn. Also watch out for ethereal creatures trying to tie up your units. Blast them with a magic missile. Basically you want to prevent their Magic Phase from happening and avoid the Blood Knights.
As for Lizards the above post has summed it up already. Nothing to add there.
Just one thing more on VC, try to kill the general as soon as possible, it really sucks to have your army crumble from like turn 2/3 (know from personal experience) and the whole army becomes unstable.
Good Shout, forgot the General part.
Does the VC General still have to be a magic user or is it a Vampire General, regardless of whether or not he has magic? I used to have a small VC army under their last book that was basically a scattering of Skellies, a Necromancer (General) and a Blood Dragon Vampire Thrall with Great Weapon and 2 Bloodline Powers, resulting in 4 WS8 S7 attacks with re-rolls to hit, re-rolls to wound and Killing Blow. Played a game vs TK, lost everyone but him and then laid waste to the enemy army with a single character, until my opponent cheated by not giving me the Ld test against "The Curse" after I split his Prince into tiny pieces. Would have won the game otherwise. Because I can't remember if it's a magic user/Vampire General I tend to just go for Vampire and Necromancer characters.
A vampire lord is a lvl 2 wizard when you buy him and a vampire thrall is a lvl 1. The most common build is a caster lord but it is not necessary to build it so actually, I tend to like the brutal combat lords instead
In the latest army book you don't have fixed bloodlines, you are able to mix and play to build a blood necrach if you so wish ^^
Oh, forgot to mention it... The Varghulf and the Blood Knights do not crumble since they have the vampire rule.
Yeah, I used to play in the days of Vampire Lord Lvl 2/3, Vampire Count Lvl 1/2, Vampire Thrall non-wizard.
A Blood Necrach? Sounds awesome. That was the problem with Blood Dragons, a Lvl 3 only gave 2 dice, not 4 (one less than Level). I might have top *dig* out the Vampires again ('scuse the pun).
I prefer my mages to be able to punch stuff up like that, thats why I like Malekith.
