I know it's not the most competitve mount for a dreadlord, but what are some of the pro's and cons?
What are some handy builds for a monster mounted dreadlord?
It's not as bad as people say actually, after all, it can have Frenzy and has Killing Blow.
The "standard" Dreadlord build works well - Pendant of Khaleth, Armour of Darkness/Armour of Eternal Servitude with either a standard Lance/Great Weapon or a magic one. The Potion of Foolhardiness works too, giving the Dreadlord an extra attack on the charge. The Ring of Darkness helps to minimise any shooting at him (with the exception of shooting attacks that don't use BS, like cannons). Also the Cloak of Hag Graef will help too (only for the Dreadlord though). As for weaponry, a standard Lance/Great Weapon will do, although Caledor's Bane and Deathpiercer are too good to pass up if you have the points. The Ironcurse Icon could also help, as I believe it gives the Manticore a 6+ ward against War Machine attacks, although I could be wrong. After all, a 6+ ward is better than a poke in the eye with a sharp stick. Or a flying goblin for that matter.
Manticores are actually pretty good if you give them a chance. For their points value they don't lose much compared to a Dragon and they're faster than a Dragon too.
I appreciate it.
I started a dark elf army with the monsters in mind.
hydras, Manticores, dark pegasus and cold ones.
supported by cauldrons, loads of infantry (spears, XBmen, Executioners).
the 'regular' lists bored me. I need to switch out of beastmen thinking. we have FAR more flexibility w/ dark elves. Good leadership, flying chars, fast cav, shooting...all handy.
I have the damn army, just no time to assemble and paint it yet.
The fun thing about having 8000-odd points of DE is that you get to pick and choose what goes in your army. I tend to play "fun lists" instead of "regular" ones. Such lists include Malekith, Horde units of 50 Witch Elves, a pure Corsair Army, an army of purely Khainite units. They don't tend to win but they are sure as hell enjoyable to play.
Need to get myself a Manticore or two though. I have a Dragon converted from a Carnosaur I could pass off as one. Also gave thought to taking the lions from the White Lion Chariot if I get one for my High Elves and sticking Dark Pegasus wings on them.
Yeah, I've got hectic painting schedule, heaps to paint, not just my beloved Dark Elves....
I'm not a HUGE fan of the white lion, but it's pretty decent.
I'm thinking of grabbing this Wolf-esque mini and adding the demon prince wings. Big enough to add a Saddle and CoK rider.
He seems to be attempting to lift off.
I have the old manticore, and I'm not a huge fan of it. It's still cool to have.
Sometimes, I wish that you could just have the monster in your army.
Nice idea, looks pretty good.
The problem I have with the "Winged Carnosaur" is that the Dark Pegasus wings look good but look a bit too small, whereas the standard Dragon wings look too big. Might just ditch the wings and use the "Steed of Slaanesh" excuse. Or try and get my hands on Balrog wings.
an army that seeks to fight without the protection of the eagle claws is clearly courageous or inept. either way, í wish no part in it - Eolaran Greyhawk, Seamaster.
You can have both saves on the same model but you have to pick which one you use. Bit like 40K saves.
Fantasy: Wood Elves, Dark Elves, Beastmen and Tomb Kings.
LotR: Misty Mountains and Rohan
I am already aware of this, but thanks for bringing it up. AoES/PoK combo still works great, as it gives you a modicum of protection from things that don't have strength values and therefore ignore the PoK save. Not a lot of thigns but still better than nothing.
I believe this have been FAQ'ed.. You can use both ward and regen now. Something about Regen Healing the wound the ward save failed to save. So it's more of a healing rather than an actual save..
