Hey, does anyone have any tactics vs. daemons, specifically slaanesh?
I played a game at a local club today and was randomly paired against a daemon player. She was fielding a slaanesh themed list, and I'd never played against daemons before. I knew everything in the army had a ward save, but other than that I didn't really know what to expect.
I was caught off guard by the daemonettes', ASF, armour piercing attacks and although I was able to tie up one unit of daemonettes with a hydra while waiting for a unit of cold ones to flank charge and save the day (unfortunately the flank charge never came as the cold ones kept failing their charge distances or came up stupid), I've still been trying to think of a suitable counter against them (besides a hydra).
As far as I can tell they do the same things two hand weapon corsairs and witches do, but better. Executioners get eaten for breakfast by daemonettes, as they simply don't have the amount of attacks to compete, and rolling 6+ armour saves doesn't save them. Black guard have the same issue, too lightly armoured and the max unit size of 20 doesn't help. Knights seem like a possible counter, however they can't cause enough casualties and because daemons don't break, they'll be tarpitted after the first round.
I'm struggling to think of a counter against them, and any advice would help. The list I used is below (it was a "take all comers list" as I wasn't sure what I would be up against today), as well as what I can recall from her list.
Sup Sorc, lvl 4, pendant, sac dag (in with spearmen)
Master, dark peg, talisman preservation, lance, hand weapon, heavy armour shield, sea dragon cloak
Master, crimson death, armour darkness (in with spears)
Assassin, extra hand weapon, rune of khaine, touch of death (in the spears)
Death hag, BSB, cauldron
48 spears deployed 5x10, Full command, banner murder, shields
12 Rxb's, shields, muso
6 Dark riders, rxb's, muso
21 Execs, full command
7 Cold One Knights, full command, ranger standard
25 Daemonettes (with herald)
10 seekers of slaanesh (bsb in this unit with -2 leadership banner)
Keeper of Secrets
3 Fiends of Slaanesh
I've actually yet to play Daemons in Fantasy.
Glittering Scales from the Lore of Metal would lessen the problem for Executioners and Black Guard, although the only other spell that would be useful in that Lore would be Final Transmutation, so it would be a bit of a wasted Lore.
Anvil and Hammer might work, with a Anvil of 35 Spearmen and flanking Hammers of 20-25 Executioners/Black Guard, even Corsairs and Witch Elves.
Apart from that I can't really help much as I haven't played against Daemons.
The warriors worked okay as an anvil, the only issue was my infantry troops got cut to bits. Daemonettes with ASF (granted by the herald), and armour piercing reduces almost all of our infantry units to a 6+ armour save, and with the multiple attacks coming our way and being only T3 daemonettes are capable of giving elves a solid beating in combat.
The only units I had that worked well were the hydra (T5 made it almost immune to daemonette attacks) and knights (because of their armour save).
I think the best tactic is to put as many attacks as possible against the Herald (causing them to lose ASF) although they're still I5 making us strike simultaneously anyways.
Lore of Death would be good for that. Thinking it through, the best strengths we have against Slanneshi Daemons is Magic, Knights and Hydras....all pretty expensive....
