I see that there hasn't been any activity in the army builder thread since July, and so I thought I would just ask for help here instead. I have been collecting and putting together dark elf models for a while now, but I think it's well past time to build a list and learn the game. I have a lot of stuff, but I don't really know where to start. What goes for a good against all comers list? I'd like a list around 1000-1500 points so I could go up to my local store and learn with people who have been playing awhile. I'll list everything I have here, and I guess I don't really expect anyone to come out and build a list FOR me (though I wouldn't complain ). Any advice and pushes in the right direction would be very helpful. So here's what I have:
2 Reaper Bolt Throwers
1 Cold One Chariot
1 Morathi on Dark Pegasus
1 Sorceress on Cold One
1 Dreadlord on Cold One
1 Lokhir Felheart
1 Lord on foot
2 Sorceresses on foot
1 War Hydra
40 Dark Elf Warriors set as Spearmen w/Shields with Full Command
20 Dark Elf Warriors set as Crossbowmen w/ 2 musicians (basically 2 units of 10 )
10 Cold One Knights w/ Full Command
30 Corsairs with extra hand weapons and Full Command
5 Dark Riders w/ crossbows and musician
This is just a list bashed together in my head, but it should be around 1500pts.
Master - Crimson Death, Armour of Darkness
Sorceress - Lvl 2, Tome of Furion, Seal of Ghrond, Lore of Shadow
35 Spearmen - Full Command, Shields, Warbanner (5 wide, 7 deep)
20 Corsairs - Full Command, Sea Serpent Standard (5 wide, 4 deep)
15 Crossbowmen - Musician, Shields (8 wide, 2 deep including Sorceress)
Cold One Chariot -
War Hydra -
2x Reaper Bolt Throwers -
Basically this list is just designed to get you used to some of the units. I could easily have put in 30 Corsairs, but at 1500pts for starting out it seems a bit "eggs in one basket". 20 is a big enough unit for you to get going with, plus 20 are still a force to be reckoned with. 35 is pretty much the optimum size for Spearmen ("Slavetrain" formation) IMHO, it's yet to fail me. The Cold One Chariot is vastly under-rated IMHO and is the perfect companion for the flanks of your Spearmen, along with the Hydra on the other flank. 15 Crossbowmen allow you 30 shots per turn at range 24", with a musician to reform. The Master is just a basic build, but still incredibly effective. The Sorceress listed above is a build that I (and I'm sure others) use regularly, giving you an extra spell and an extra dispel dice. Bolt Throwers seem to be a unit that gets a lot of slating, and I honestly can't see why. Theres always a place for them in my armies (unless it's the Khainite one).

Hmm I swear I hit reply... but it never showed up. anyways, I meant to say thanks! This is just what I needed, a list to play with while figuring out all the rules. Thanks again!
I'd also look into getting some more special units, they're what really gives the army direction (and certainly add a hell of a punch), for instnace, I generally run this at 1.5K
Tome of Furion, Level 4, Seal of Ghrond, Ironcurse Icon, Shrieking Blade
Hydra Banner, Heavy Armour, Cloak, Halberd
20 Repeater Crossbowmen with a musician and shields
18 Corsairs, Full Command, Sea Serpent Standard
20 Black Guard, Full Command, CD, Banner of Murder
I still consider this an all-comers list as each unit, with the help of a little magic can take on other enemy units with ease (especially the Bannered Black Guard). It's not trying to be defensive but instead an aggressive list that works in synergy with itself.
