Hey guys I am looking into dark elves as I love their model line and am interested in alot of their units. Firstly is the battalion a good start, I love all the units it comes with and was wondering if buying a Battalion, a box of warriors, a bolt thrower and hydra a good start? Or at least heading in the right direction?
First of all, welcome and good choice. Dark Elves are just plain awesome.
To answer your question, it's a brillaint start. In my opinion the Battalion boxed set is great value for money, as you get a ready-made army in a box, and the addition of some more warriors, the Bolt Thrower and the Hydra will help to build your force up. I'd also recommend adding a Sorceress in there too (a Master/Dreadlord isn't too important, you can convert one from spare knight/warrior and corsair components).
Can I get away with not using executioners?? Not that a unit of great weapons isnt appealing but honestly I dont like the models and they are rather pricey :/ or is there a conversion?
There is a conversion from warriors, I think @Kura posted a link to it in an earlier thread.
Yes you can get away without Executioners. Knights will be able to kill heavily armoured opponents, or slap Killing Blow on any unit with a Cauldron to strip them down (Corsairs or
Witch Elves are really nasty for this), whilst magic, Hydras and Bolt Throwers will deal with them too.
Of course, Executioners, if they're in the list or not, are still the primary unit for dealing with armoured enemies. It's their job after all, and "Mathhammer" proves that Executioners (with a +1A buff from Cauldron) will kill heavily armoured troops more easily than Black Guard with Killing Blow (because Black Guard are for killing light-mid level infantry and Executioners are there to kill heavy armour.
But you can easily compensate for not having Executioners in plenty of ways.
cool thank you, also im wondering how to outfit the corsairs, weather to go two hand weapons or play them more defensively with repeater handbows for stand and shoot and harassment
also I did find the conversion and I actually have a bunch of skaven spears somewhere so that was my biggest issue was the cost, thanks for telling me about it.
No worries mate.
It really comes down to personal preference if you want 2hw or handbows. My personal preference is for 2hw, but that's because I use my Corsairs for helping to thin units along with Black Guard or Witch Elves, or as a supporting unit for my Spearmen. I do have a unit with Handbows, I tend to use them in more of a supporting role, such as moving into the face of an enemy unit and peppering it with fire or harassing units by staying out their charge arc and shooting them, then flank/rear charging the unit if the turn to face the Corsairs or if the enemy ignores the Corsairs and engages another unit.
