Hey folks I'm fairly new to warhammer fantasy but think I got the general idea locked down now and am ready to start with real army specific strategy. My buddy and normal opponent plays warriors of chaos and while I don't want to be cheap and build an army specifically to beat just that army I would love some pointers.
Currently we are playing at 3k points and I have 30 crossbows, 30 spearman, 20 corsairs, 2 regular sorceresses, 10 blackguard, 5 shades, 5 cold one knights, a beast master battle standard bearer, hydra, Morathi, and 2 repeater bolt throwers. Last time I held my own but ended up loosing by a short point spread mainly due to his giant catching and stomping on my morathi character. I am just barely able to hit my 3k cap with this setup so am looking to boost my army. Any general suggestions on strategies or what troops might work good for me?
Hmm.... it does seem to be quite thinly spread for 3k. I'd suggest 2.5k games would be the better option with that force.
For boosting your army I would definitely increase the Black Guard to 20, increase the size of the Knights to between 7 and 10, and maybe add another Bolt Thrower or two.
Your army is fine, it is just slightly lacking in dedicated hitting power. More Bolt Throwers, Knights, Executioners would remedy that.
Two questions: What does Morathi have and how did the Giant catch her?
Thanks for the advice but it does lead to a follow up...would you recommend cold one knights or dark riders? I didn't have much trouble with the stupidity rule last game, but I see a lot of posts warning away from them because of that.
As for Morathi it was mostly stupidity she's on a Pegasus so I figured I could move her to my front ranks for casting range and move her back before she got in risk and didnt realize just how far that monster could charge
Clarification Morathi was stupidity by me not the cold ones
Cold One Knights and Dark Riders perform two vastly different roles within the army: Knights charge into things and kill them good whilst Dark Riders are a nuisance unit, harrying the opposition with crossbow fire and picking off enemy skirmishers/fast cavalry. Stupidity on the Knights isn't really a problem, their Ld9 and usually within BSB/General range.
Morathi is always a good laugh, I actually tend to keep her away from the main army and have her flying down the flanks/into gaps in the enemy lines. Yeah, 8th edition has those problems with charge ranges. Don't forget you can always flee if the charger is far enough away. One good anti-charge deterrent is to give her the Black Dragon Egg. If she looks like she's going to be charged then pop that and she's T6 and has a breath weapon. If she isn't charged then fly her out of harms way next to an enemy unit and then breath fire all over them after blasting them with magic. Soulstealer is just a godly spell for keeping her alive too. 6 wounds with a 4+ ward and MR2? Thank you.
