I am a new player, and joined a small escalation group. We started at 325 and are slowly working our way up. We are currently at 500 pints, and my main concern is the high elves. They seem to have similar troops, but all with always strikes first. I was able to win at 400 pts by going very missle havy, but now he is looking to use Dragon princes or phoenix guards, in addition to a great eagle and a large block of spearmen.
I am not sure the missle tactics will be very effective vs the phoenix guard or dragon princes (not sure which way he's leaning). Any suggestions?
What army are you using? If you let me know what he is using and what you are using I can let you know what to put in and what to leave out.
Although highelves always get always strikes first coupled with the reroll because of high initiative they are very very week in strength and also cannt take the pummeling back. i find that using orks they tend to kill my first couple of men but due to the large size of my squad I can take the hits and then have enough left to attack back with. With regards to pheonix gaurd just simply pitch a large group of cheap troops against them, with them not having many attacks (1 each) they dont tend to be real killers they can just stick around a long time. Heavy armour and a 4+ward can be hard to shift but if you can outnumber and out rank and also manage to kill one or two then you have a good chance of breaking them. A unit of dragon princes is deadly ... 2 attacks strength 5 on the charge plus horses and a 2+ armour save can be quiet deadly but its simple ... dont let him charge or lure him into a counter charge. strength 3 is laughable as he trys to take on tough units like beastmen, orks, dwarfs and chaos. If he uses lots of missles just meat shield your units e.g. some nice goblins infront of a nice unit of ork boys should do the trick.
All elf armys have good shooting and have high weapon skill but then when it comes to taking damage back they just crumble. GLASS CANNONS.
You should only worry when hes got 10 swordmasters on the board. The nastiest special unit choice IMO.
I run dark elves, and swordsmen were not too bad earlier, because they went down to missle fire easily enough, and i was able to handle the remainder.
10 Swordmasters are nothing to worry about, a round or two of shooting/magic and they're nearly always dealt with. The problems arise when you face a block of 20+ with a High mage and a Metal mage buffing them (Glittering Scales to give them a 3+ armour and Shield of Saphery for a 5+ ward).
The main strength of Phoenix Guard lies in their 4+ ward, it allows them to soak a huge amount of damage. I usually take mine with the Standard of Balance (units in base contact with the Banner including the bearer gain Immune to Psychology, but lose Hatred and Frenzy). Also, killing one or two and hoping to break them in combat isn't as reliable as you'd hope. One game I had 25 Witch Elves and 36 Spearmen charge my block of 20 in the flank and front respectively: I lost 2 Phoenix Guard and killed 4 Witch Elves and 7 Spearmen. The best bet is to hit them with a spell that ignores saves altogether or shoot the crap out of them.
Dragon Princes are good, but Cold One Knights are better. A couple of Bolt Throwers firing multiple shots will kill them off surprisingly quick (hitting on 3s/4s, wounding on 3s and reducing them to a 4+ save) and enough crossbow bolts will eventually wear them down. Watch out for the Banner of Ellyrion, this allows them to happily charge through terrain without any repercussions (I should know, I do the same with with Cold One Knights and the Ranger Standard) and can mean a surprise flank/rear charge when you least expect it.

Dark elves should have no problems out shooting high elves and he is running spearmen anyway, i would run lothern sea gaurd because although they are dearer in point id just like my core to shoot at you for 2 to 3 turns then rank up and get all there ranks of spears as they will get 4, 5 if horded. Just put sum corsairs on, i tested out an army of my friends that was dark elves and yes cold one knights are hard and cause fear . its not game winning but it is annoying when you need 6's to hit. anyone that lets there swordmasters get shot at is stupid, my friend keeps his hidden ready to move a little unit of spearmen out the way ready for the charge and he runs with caradryan to give them a 4+ward from magic (magic resistence 3). Id personally just shoot anything thats faster first, dragons, dragon princes, silver helms, ellryion reavers & eagles, then just wait for his footsloggers to come (taking anything nasty first) and get shot before whats left of them charges and is easy to dispatch.
