I am posting this in a new topic since it seems the army builder sticky is dead.
I need help with building a list with a 2000 point cap that is a compromise between competitve and fun. by fun I mean not only enjoyable to play but will also force me to learn various tactics to make dark elves successful.
my first attempt lead me to a list with a block of 40 corsairs that with a little help and lokhir, is basically an I win in round 1 if I deploy correctly. that would not be fun for me. I would like to see a reasonable amount of shooty, even if it is limited to units that will be hunting down casters/warmachines. I find myself liking on the paper of the army book shades, dark riders, and Cold one Knights, and I like lore of shadows and lore of fire as those 2 lores seem to be good choices for a newb.
all help will be appreciated.
Just to point out, 40 Corsairs and Lokhir isn't really "I win". Big templates will ruin you (except Mortars, just laugh at their S3).
Firstly though, what units do you own/are there any units you don't want in the army?

I currently have no dark elf units yet. I am trying to use a first list as a way of planning efficient purchasing of units, making of a gift list for the gw website, and determining how much modeling I will need to do if I want to find plastic alternatives to some of the metal units. As far as units I don't want, well the named lords are too expensive for 2000 points, as are, it seems to me the named heroes. Other than that I am willing to consider anything but i would prefer units that are reasonable in close combat, can be good for flanking/outflanking, and can use stand and shoot as a charge reaction.
