Hey, me and 2 of my warhammer buddies are all starting new armies, but to make it more fun while we're building we're going to start off using the new warbandes thingy. My one friend is doing skaven -clan eshin- and the other is doing the hated High Elves.
I was wondering if you guys could help me come up with what kind of dark elves to do.
 Thanks in Advance
Well definitely pick up 2 boxes of dark elf warriors first thing. Unless of course you are going for corsairs, in which case get 2 of those boxes.
With the Warriors Box, the boxes will come with enough bits to build 32 warriors.
-Build one regiment of 20 spearmen, full command.
-Build one regiment of 10 crossbowmen, either full command or all except musician.
-Invest in a hero model to be your general
-Buy a reaper bolt thrower for some heavy support.
This should provide a solid and adaptable starting base from which to build any army you'd like in the future. The dark elf warriors are solid troops with high discipline, weapon skills, ballistic skills, and decent point costs. I wouldn't leave home without them.
Possible ways to expand the army in the future depend on what sort of army you desire. Consider:
-SHOOTY ARMY: Max out rare slots with Reaper Bolt throwers in 2000+ point army lists. Forget spearmen, equip all your warriors (and you should have plenty of them) with bows and shields. 75% of your army should be laying down a hail of death as the enemy advances towards you. And when you finally get into close combat, the bowman will have a 4+ armor save, seeing as how they are fighting with a hand weapon and a shield and wearing light armor. This is pretty good for elves. Take a few hard hitting melee troops to balance out the list a bit.
-SMASH AND GO ARMY: This is the closest thing to a melee army the elves will ever have. Elves cannot fight a war of attrition and win, period. They do not have the staying power. As a result, elves must take advantage of their speed, manueverability, and superior skills to win in melee. A Smash and Go army should be based around 1 principle: designing fast units which can hit/charge and enemy, strike first, lay waste to their front rank, cause havok to their moral, and cause them to flee, or at least be severely weakened right from the getgo. Supplement this with a few ranged weapons, say on dark riders, while also using them to flank and cause more psychological havok. Here is an example of a Smash and Go unit of infantry to it's extreme:
20 executioners with full command
Magic Banner of Murder held by standard bearer
Lord as Battle Standard bearer carrying the Hydra Banner
on the charge, this unit gets an average of 15 attacks, 10 of which are str 5 and killing blow. The enemy will most likely lose at least 5 troops, meaning his front rank cannot fight back. If this unit is not spearmen, the unit cannot fight back at all, and the combat is done. You will also most likely outnumber after this is finished, and they will be down one rank. This means they will be down about by about 5 or 6 on their break test, meaning they almost certainly flee. Another effortless victory for the dark Elves!
Remember, this sort of strategic thinking is essential, as with only a 6+ armor save, those executioners will NOT last long in a war of attrition.
Hope this helps a little...
FYI, the executioners were erratated to have heavy armor, giving them a 5+ Sv.
In a warband, I would switch from darkelves to cult of slaanesh. Then you would take a unit of devoted, 12 strong w/ command and speed, a unit of warriors, 15 strong w/ the mark, command, and shields, and then a sorc w/ lvl 2 and the mark. You then put the sorc with the unit of warriors. This a 499 point army, which is standard points for warbands. It is also is a legal 500 point army for normal warhammer!
If you want to go back to dark elves after collecting more points, you can use the models that you got for cult of slaanesh.
