    Crystal of Midnight

I've just been pushing options around in a 2250pt list that I'm working on for an up-coming tournie and the Crystal of Midnight caught my eye. At the same points cost as a dispel scroll (which is what it's competing with) I thought it might be interesting. My line of thought is that it will inhibit the actual volume of incoming magic over the whole game, making itself as handy as a dispel. I know I'd have to wait until the opponent was already on the back foot in any particular magic phase (it's only power level 4) but it could really spoil a low level's day or take a bit of the wind out of a TK sails. Thoughts and comments please- especially if you've used it in 2250pt tournaments!

No more NG spearmen, thanks! Now I need some pump-wagons!

I haven't used it yet, but plan to very soon. One thing to keep in mind is that its usefulness also depends on your opponents Ld. For instance, against Skaven and O&G it can be wonderful.

True- anything to slow down those vicious grey seers and warlocks is good. I think I'll take it (it's not an important tournament) and let you know how it goes.

Finished tournament. Crystal of Midnight was pretty poor. I fought 5 battles- 2 armies had no wizards (Dwarfs and High Elves- didn't see that one coming), a chaos army of Tzeentch, Skaven and Bretonnians. It managed to remove one spell from a chaos sorcerer- the one spell he'd had no intention of using. Against the Skaven it drew out a dispel scroll, which I guess was handy but maybe a power stone would have done the same with more variety of options. Against the Bretonians the irritating wee damsel passed the Ld test. She gotten eaten by cold ones in the next turn so not really a problem. Would I take it again? No.

Lifetaker, however, rocked- Shadow Warriors, Plague Censer bearers, Troll Slayers all got needled by it. Superb weapon.

Well that's unfortunate. As for me I have been using with great success. I wait until I have had a great magic phase (3 or 4 spells cast successful) and lay it on them. Buy successfully casting this number of spells, it usually draws out their dispell scrolls and all dispell dice.

However in a tournament, I probably won't take it. I use it in a league I belong to where I can have 7 seperate army lists to choose from.

Yeah, that was kinda my plan. I just didn't get those really good magic phases as often as I wanted. I agree that it can be handy but no, not in a tournament list.
