Hello everyone :w00t:
It just occurred to me (through advice from another member) that unit champioins really don't seem that helpful.....
What are your thoughts on unit champions, and what units (if any) do you put unit champions in and why? (Or visa versa...is there a reason why you would not use unit champions in a specific unit?).
All comments are welcome (Except: Nasty ones, Short ones, Long ones, Medium ones, Rubbish ones, Fake ones, Ugly ones and Fat ones). That is all.

Essentially, unit champs are useful if you wnat to protect a character from challenges, and generally ok in big blocks. Shooting champions are almost never useful, especially if they don't get the +1Bs.
Use Light, Beasts, Metal instead of Heavens
NecroLords: Use at least one Death Mage
Brets: Use Peasants&Damsels
Skaven: Don't use Skryre SAD
I find them pretty handy. They have an extra attack (usually) and have to be allocated specific attacks to kill them off. They're also useful for distracting nasty enemy heroes who would otherwise butcher large numbers of troops (sure, they get overkill, but at least we're still getting an outnumbering bonus!) They can also stop wizards getting picked on in close combat. They usually have nice models, too.
No more NG spearmen, thanks! Now I need some pump-wagons!
Yes, unit champions are useful. My major opponent is against chaos and put simply, you cant beat them in melee combat. My opponent also has a really annoying habbit of challenging my relatively inferior DE characters. A unit champion allows me to accept the challenge with him and hopefully allow my character to take down some standard chaos warriors, thereby contributing to combat res.
In short, characters are handy.
I agree that they would be really handy for accpeting challenges in place of characters that you dont want to lose. But apart from that i think they are a total waste of points.
Certain squads like warriors i guess its ok bcoz its fairly cheap, but with units like cold one knights, where the dread knight costs nearly 20 points! for about an extra 10 you could take another whole knight, rather than just 1 extra stat.
So basically i think its fine to take the cheaper champions. or to take them in squads that you know your characters will be in is ok.
But taking the expensive ones (CoK's & blackguard). & taking them in more than say 2 squads, is a no no in my opinion.
If you have say 8 squads in your army and they all have a champ. thats going to eqaul around 100 points.. for what? 6 extra attacks and maybe +1BS? ... for the 100 points you could take like 8 shades or harpies.. which not only gives you the same amount of attacks as the champ upgrades, but also the extra wounds that your opponent has to make. Not to mention greater tactical flexibility with having an extra unit.
