Ok, i've got a problem and here it is....
I never know what exactly to do with my characters. I always like a very powerful looking Lord and lots of powerful Heroes. I find it hard to do anything with my characters if i dont stack up their magic items and upgrades to the max This usually means that in a 2000 pt game i'll have around 850-1000pts (half my force ) of characters, and barely no troops.
These are the cararacters that i usually take(in 2k battles):
Highborn - Heartstone, Sword of Might, Shield of Ghrond, Hvy armour, SDC, Dark Pegasus. =290pts
Noble - Battle Standard, Hydra Banner, Cold One, Hvy Armour, SDC. = 211
Sorceress - Level2, Cold One, Wand of the Kharaidon = 196
Sorceress - Level 2, Darkstar Cloak, Seal of Ghrond = 175
Total = 872pts
Cult of Slaanesh
Druchii Anointed - Level2, Heartstone, Quickening blood, Aura of Slaanesh, great wep, Steed of Slaanesh = 461
Sorceress - Level2, Darkstar Cloak, Seal of Ghrond, Mark of Slaanesh = 195
Noble - Battle Standard, Hydra Banner, Cold One, Hvy Armour, SDC, Mark of Slaanesh. = 231
Aspiring Champ - Mark of Slaanesh, Armour of Damnation, Sword of Might, Shield = 152pts
Total = a wooping 1037
Any help at all on what to do. please.
Streamline the Highborn. Heartstone, Heavy Armour, Shield, SDC and a Lance are perfectly enough.
Use Light, Beasts, Metal instead of Heavens
NecroLords: Use at least one Death Mage
Brets: Use Peasants&Damsels
Skaven: Don't use Skryre SAD
I'm usually pretty character light- Rarely a lord in under 3000pts games. Usually I have 1 or 2 sorceresses, sometimes both level 2. They are usually pretty well equiped for magic defence. I pretty much always, always take a battle-standard bearer but he wears only heavy armour, SDC and LifeTaker (or Seal of Ghrond). My general will get a bunch of mundane armour and some sort of magic sword if I feel he's been good and deserves it. Usually nothing more than 30pts. I have started using a noble or beastmaster on a dark pegasus with 2 hand weapons and that nasty Web of Shadows- but he's only around if I take 1 sorceress. He does horrible things to stray enemy wizards, then carries on into enemy warmachines.
Dark Elves advantage is in reliable, competent troops who are quick and manueverable, backed up by a versatile list of other troop options. Infantry will make and break your army- don't ever forget it. If you have too many characters (T3, W3- that ain't so tough) then you're killing your own army before you're on the table. I just don't find heavily tooled up characters pay for themselves.
No more NG spearmen, thanks! Now I need some pump-wagons!
Ok, i've resuffled my DE characters a bit:
Highborn - Heartstone, Heavy Armour, Shield, SDC, Lance, Dark Pegasus = 249
Noble - Battle Standard, Hydra Banner, Cold One, Hvy Armour, SDC. = 211
Sorceress - Level2, Cold One = 156
Sorceress - Level 1, Seal of Ghrond = 115
Total = 731pts (thats 141pts less then before!)
Hows that look. I wont let the Highborn go yet cos i like his Ld and other stats too much better then those that a Noble has. Or will a noble do just as good, i usually use the Highborn to charge a lone mage/war machine/chariot/skink unit and than return to the battle to lend his Ld out (often rear charging an enemy unit).
Has anyone got anything to say on my CoS characters - i desperatly need help there!
Ummm...Ok...A couple of weeks later and no reply! C'mon! Surelly theres someone out there!
Well those characters are certainly lighter on the points front. An extra 141 points could come in useful to beef up the other areas of your army. However, the level 2 sorceress doesn't really need to ride a cold one. Maybe drop that and give her a couple of dispel scrolls instead?Originally Posted by Dark Pain
Personally I don't like taking too many characters when I can get another couple of infantry or cavalry units, but that's my style of play so it's up to you. I also like beastmasters riding manticores, simply because if your rider dies you still control the manticore - no reaction test!! :w00t:
I'm afraid I don't play CoS because I do not like the list at all, so I can't really comment too much (except that's a lotta points!!). I would say that not every lord and hero has to be maxed out with magic weapons/armour/steeds. I also think that, personally, I wouldn't bother making the druchii a level 2 sorcerer, because that's 80 points gone right there. Again this is your choice, but I would make him a strong fighty model to go with some dark elf warriors. Also, the aspiring champ doesn't need to be kitted out with armour of damnation and the sword of might. I would, again, just put him in with a unit to give them a bit of extra power.
The reason that one sorceress has got a cold one is that I've only got 2 sorceress models: one on foot and the other on a cold one. I got them for my b'day when i first started collecting and i dont see the point of waisting $16 or $18 to get something that i already have - another sorceress.
But maybe if i got another dark rider and put the mounted sorceress on its steed and put the rider on the cold one maybe i could have character on a cold one - i dont actually have one yet (my current BS is actually the CoK standard bearer). Make him BSB perhaps? what do you guys rekon about that conversion?
dont mean to sound like a jerk, but why would you spend all those points on a battlestandard bearer? the lowest leadership in DE army is 8. the ONLY time i find this useful is when fighting a fear/terror based army like VC. the best DE standard is 150pts alone and the range just doesnt make it practical unless you plan on swarming your troops into one location. a hydra banner is nice, but again ur spending a ton of points on a character that's gonna be focused on cuz ur opponent should know you cant upgrade them much.
i play CoS primarly now (started as DE). jimmy_boy is right, dont spend the 80 points on the anointed to make him cast. he's a killer combat machine, use him for that. i go anointed and 2 level 2 sorcs one mounted on darksteed in dark rider unit(dark magic), other on foot (general, slaneesh magic). this way i have the points to spare to spend on a nice wicked unit of chaos warriors and bolt throwers.

Thanks. I'll drop the BSB, cheapen the anointed and have 2 sorceresses. Lets see...
Druchii Anointed: Great wep, Quickening Blood, Heart-stone of Darkness, Steed of Slaanesh = 351pts
Sorceress of Slaanesh: Level 2, MoS, Wand of the Kharaidon = 190pts
Sorceress: Level 2, Dispel Scroll, Seal of Ghrond, Dark Steed = 192pts
TOTAL = 733pts
Thats almost 300pts cheaper! Should i get a Aspiring Champion or Noble to lead some units, or should i use the points just on more troops?
i always wanna squeeze in an aspiring champ as well to go with my chaos warriors, but i can never manage the points to do it unless i take less fast cav. it wouldnt hurt at all if you could do it, they have awesome stats for a hero.
also consider taking Musk for your anointed if you plan on fighting stuff that has high WS... it makes those players that rely on heros to win their battle cringe. snipe charges at any freestanding heros or issue challenges with an anointed, u wont be let down
