I just got ahold of an OOP Rakarth model and the more I look at him the more he strikes me as not that useful. I mainly got him for the cool looking dragon braccus and the fact that he can be easily modified into a highborn but as always I am a sucker for fluffy characters and I'm considering using him as is. Full rules for him are available online here and he winds up being as a character himself worth 150pts and statwise is between a regualr beastmaster and a noble.(really freakin expensive for his stats) He gets a great armor save and the whip is pretty fluffy but other than that he is really not that spectacular. I guess this is a cheaper way to get a black dragon into an army but not really by that much.
Opinions? Should I just buy the top half of the oop DE general torso from the classic/collector's range and modify this guy to be a regular highborn or what? He'd wind up being around 550pts but that's alot better than this guy at 470 methinks.
I know manticores are probably better as a bang for the buck monster but having a dragon is just way too cool to pass up. Besides it's almost a crime not to take one when the Black Dragons are probably the most numerous of all the dragons left and awake.

Hmmm, he isn't TOO bad.......not my cup of tea though,
I much prefer a tooled up highborn on dragon....especially with the new gauntlet of power or something else equally nasty.
Manticores are nice though.....and slightly cheaper/more available as you can have two in a 2000 points game.
Also, fluffwise, the DE army book actually says that "malekith has a new weapon with which to wreak havoc" or something and goes on to say he has been breeding dragons which have begun to hatch.....
This would seem to imply that, for the DE's anyways, dragons are becoming much more common......
Also, look at the cover of the book....i could swear those are dragons circling in the background...
I did a highborn on black dargon, but I didnt bother too much with conversions.. I just baught malekith for the dragon, and put a Dread knight (cold one knight champion) as the rider.. and gave him malekith's cape to make him look a bit more menacing.
If you want to have a highborn on dragon, then seriously dude, just say thats what the Rakrath model is!.. no-one would argue it. and it doesnt look bad at all..
Regarding DE's & dragons, I'll refer to the recent thread regarding Malekith. I dont want to repeat myself.

Ah yeah I read that, how you think the Dragons are a bit overpriced for what you get. Yeah I guess that's true, I think that dragons need to get some stat bonuses and keep the same points value. Like 1 extra str would even do it.
I'm not sure if I'm going to use the Rakarth model itself or not, I really REALLY like the way the old cold one general looks. Just compelety badass and I always thought Rakarth looked a little meh. Maybe some GS and a really sinister paintjob would help him out...
