Greetings devotees of Khaine!
I am new to DE and need some advice for my starter army:
- Is it worth spending points on shields for x-bow warriors?
- Is it worth spending points on a full command for Dark Riders?
- Have any of you any knowledge about the uniform themes for each of the DE cities (maybe from novels and such)? Purple seems to be the number one colour for DE armies, but I would like mine green.
Any help appreciated!
If you're going for small units of dark riders then i probably wouldn't give them a standard, the risk of giving your opponent 100 VP is too great here.
I always give musicians however as i think they are golddust, great for rallying!
I agree with Stonehambey about the Dark rider upgrades. He forgot one point though.
Dark Riders should really only ever get into combat with a flank charge, when there is a friendly unit fighting that unit to the front. Because of this, the unit to the front should already have a standard bearer. You only get 1 standard bearer bonus per combat, so having a second on the riders would go to waste.
As for shields on crossbow guys, it depends who you are facing. Its probably a waste against an army with high strength shooting/attacks. but against say, elves, with low strength, the save can be handy. Its also better against armies who are more likely to hit them in Close combat than with shooting, since you only get the 'parry' rule in CC.
Also, in 7th edition rules, you are more likely to have your sorceresses in a unit of crossbows (rather than NEAR them in the past), so giving the unit shields is a pretty cheap way to protect her a bit more.
As a rule of thumb, I dont take upgrades for crossbow guys unless I have some spare points.. OR, if theres a sorceress, they'll get shields & maybe a musician.
I dont think green would turn out very well.. people would probably always ask why they look like wood elves lol. If you dont like the purple scheme then I would suggest a dark red.

honestly with the dark riders, i question if taking a musician is worth it anymore, well because of the auto rally from feigned flight. and if they get shot down they are probably to few to really do anything anymore.
my druchii color scheme is chainmail midnight blue and gore red. nice and evil like
and shields on xbows has always benefitted me pretty much every time ive had it (except against dwarfs). but yeah all i hear is cheese when a fully upgraded warrior with shield and xbow costs the same as a high elf bowman without light armor. =)
Darks Elves 6000ptsWood Elves 500pts (WIP)
Imperial Guard 5000pts
Dark Riders do rally automatically due to fast cavalry rules. Any hero in the unit gets this ability too.
And I painted my DE warriors green. I used Boltgun for the chainmail skirts, dark angels green for the cloth skirts beneath the chainmail, and I highlighted the ridges of the armor with a bit of snot green, then I did an ink wash over that with the dark green ink. The green turned out really dark (but still very visable against the black armor) and it looks really nice (for being my first few models painted). I also did my dark elves as a dark skin race, similar to drow...I don't know if that helped the fact that the armor was green instead of purple or not, but I like it. I think it turned out really nicely.
I'm working on getting a camera so I can take pictures too and put them up. I'll post a link here or message you or something to let you see how they turned out.
Sailor by career, pirate by heart.
However the rules (pg 70) actually have an 'and' instead of a '...' This indicates that the unit must both choose to flee and THEN rally afterwards in order to get their special fast cav rules. So no automatically rallying, that is still a roll. So a musician is still of value.
I've had a GW staffer try to feed that line to me before. He also tried it with the dwarf gyrocopter. The guy in question routinely bends rules to his advantage, but when forced to actually look at the brb, he eventually admitted that he was wrong.
I think you could do a neat DE paint scheme with dark green and periodic splashes of red. I think it would look nice and poisonous. A little wood elfy, but who cares. Nice and evil also.

Arena of Death Champion: Nexim of the Guldskullz Tribe. Fear my wrath!
I agree with Kooshlord. Read the rules again carefully, it says when they feign flight, and subsiquently rally at the start of their next turn (it then goes on to say what they can do once they rally). 'Subsiquently' means IF they DO rally, THEN they can go on to do whatever it says they can do.
The major change being that they can now shoot in the turn they really. Which is good, but still no auto rallies!
Personally, I think they SHOULD auto rally, since they arent really fleeing in fear or anything. They made a deliberate tactical decision to flee, so once they are clear they should be able to make an equally deliberate decision to turn around again.
IMO you should only have to roll to rally when retreating from failing a break test or fear/terror. Since the troops are actually FLEEING, not just a tactical retreat.
But anyway, thats how it stands.

Welcome to the Druchii... I hope you'll serve our king well.
on to the questions.
on the x-bow chase I'd say what that it depends on their purpose. Mine are usually defending my boltthrowers and therefore I give them shields to be able to hold in CC. Or, as some have said, if you got a character in there you'll want to have shields to protect him/her. But usually they have shields in saml games as DE units are expensive and they have multiple purposes, in bigger games you'll have more specialized units. Mine almost always has shields and are in 4x3 formation while in CC.
as for the dark riders I'd say that the unit champion isn't worth it IMO. 14pts for +1 in BS? that's 2 shots that gets a little easier to hit every turn... not very good. Musician is a must, I'm shure the other posters have already explanied why. The standard are splitt opinions about, some think it's not worth it as the enemy can get +100vp from your fragile riders and others think that the +1CR is worth the risk. Id say that if you're new to warhammer in general try wothout standard first and when you get more experienced you can try it out.
As for the paint scheme... I think any colour would look great as long as you can use it right. The Dark Elves is a very dark fraction so I don't recomend any bright colours as your "main" colour, if you want green then let dark angels green with a tiny bit of skull white be your base... start highlighting with dark angels green and each layer been a little more darker mixing a little chaos black so the "top" player is kinda black but you still nitice the green.
Also a tip from me... when painting light armoured guys try and think of their armour as hardened leather armour as I don't think anyone would think a full plate or a full chainmale armour is "light". And leather armour can be coloured in any colour as long as it isn't glossy. Even the heavy armour models I'd like to paint with as little "metal" colours as posible and add more darker colours. If you think a model have too much armour showing, model some cloth with green stuff.
Cause I personally think too much metal colours on elves doesn't look that good. To me fluff wise elves have surpassed the pure metal thing... it's like someone say this: "oh that's soooo 1960". They are magical races always enchants them in one way or another, making them lighter (HE barding), prettier (HE in general...) or dark and gothic (DE! )... and WE go all hippie style and don't wear armour haha. The typical metal look belongs to human fractions IMO.
I have my army mostly black in armour with some darker shades of grey as highlight and a very very dark blue (midnight blueish) as the colour of my army and a tiny bit of mythril silver/gold for jewelry and such. The skin of my elves are mixed with 2/3 ol'Palid FLesh and 1/3 elf flesh... to get a little more of the "dark theme" feeling.
Thanks to all who have replied to this thread!
Looks to me that the DE community is a thriving one :-)
Good points about the DR command, since they are basically flankers. I definately want another unit holding the enemy up before I charge in with the DR, so that makes standard bearer pretty useless. Musician it is.
As for the x-bows, I have painted a few shields from the empire shield sprues and glued them on to the x-bow warriors' back. I think a small shield is perfect for troops who are basically a missile unit. The small size of the empire shield reflects that nicely. It really worked out well, and the shields dont "dominate" the miniature.
As for the colour theme, I am sticking to green. I use DA green with some snot green, and also use a bit of scorpion green highlight to give them a proper "eldritch" look. I am experimenting with scaly green and jade green also. Will post pictures when I get my digicam fixed. Metallic colours combined with light green tones are sooo fluffy. If anyone makes any remarks about them being too woodelfy, I shall pay them back with proper DE viciousness!
