    considering starting dark elves

Ha ha, i never thought i'd be doing this. Right so I've been playing 40k for some years now, but i want to get back to what I've always wanted to do and play Fantasy. I'm torn between Tomb Kings and Dark Elves. I'm wondering if you guys have any comments or suggestions that can help me make up my bloody mind. Right now I play Guard, Templars, and Chaos in 40k, so I'm looking for something different style wise. Thanks in advance, Greenbeard.

A fine choice, my man! Dark Elves are a fairly (in-correctly) maligned army. Lot's of people can't see past the whole T3 thing but there's a lot more to us than that. Sure- if it came to a straight out punch-up Dark Elves have trouble but it never comes to that because we're so cunning.
In Warhammer victory goes to whoever gets the right troops in the right place at the right time. Dark Elves are good at this as we have a wide range of troops, all with good stats, backed up by excellent characters. We've got good offensive magic, great fast cav, cheap and dangerous infantry, lethal elites, fear causing chariots, the games best warmachine (away with your misfire dice!), fear causing heavy cav and piratey chaps as a core choice! What more could you want?
We out manuever Dwarves, out magic the Empire, out fight the undead and terrorise goblins and skaven!

    Join the dark side!

I temper all of this by saying that when it goes wrong with Dark Elves it goes really wrong. Give your self loads of warning that you'll be massacred time and again while you learn to use the army but once you have it mastered not much can stop you.
No more NG spearmen, thanks! Now I need some pump-wagons!

well my first army was DE's and yes i did get raped many many times, but if you dont care about your opponents hating you when you use the most insane tactics, then this is the army for you. and by insane i mean sacrificing a 20 (wo)man unit of witch elves JUST to make sure 5 choas choosen khorne knights didnt get to your pretty little mages (BTW my witches pwned those knights)

well I'm pretty much sold on the idea of dark elves. I was glancing at the army book today, and I'm curious what you guys use for your lord models, like what models did you use to convert them and so forth.

I know... who would have thought such a potentially cool model had never been made. Most people use converted champions or classic range figures. I'm trying to get my hands on a Mengal of 'Mengals Manflayers' to use.

    No contest..

I just played a 1500pt game against Tomb Kings with my Dark elves on the weekend..

I won by more than 1500 points... Does that help your decision at all?

ha ha ha yes it does. What should i get as as a good starting force? I was looking at well the rule book and so forth, two sorcs, and two blocks of warriors for a start. Does that seem like a good place to start.

i would consider starting with some darkriders and xbow warriors, regular spearmen suck and should only be taken if you have extra points, i would only suggest them against goblins or highelves. but you want speed and ranged to start out with

I have to absolutely disagree with that. I think spearmen are great. Large blocks cheap spearmen make a great base for an army. Then you can add on specialist units and bolt throwers. I'd start with a single sorceror and try to sort out a lord. Battle Standards are also worth their tiny little weight in gold.

Edit: When I say lord I don't mean lord level neccesarily. Just a figure that can represent a lord or a noble.

I agree with The Paint Monkey. Malekith1337 is obsessed with shooting (Imperial Guard, Empire, Dwarves & shooty dark elves  c'mon). in a game dominated by close combat, its not they way to go. He doesnt realise the value of spearmen because he simply doesnt use them (or doesnt know HOW). I used a unit of 20 once which wiped out about 400 points worth of dwarves.

Granted, its easier to just sit back & shoot, but its harder to win. Whereas its harder to learn how to go on the attack, but once you do its easier to win. I lost probably 90% of my first dozen games. Now that Ive somewhat mastered them I probably win about 85%, and half of the non-wins are draws. You'll find if you use all shooty, you'll only win about 50%, and that will be on the days when your dice rolls are lucky, not from good tactics etc.
However I agree with him about getting dark riders.

Tell me what style of army you want to play, and what points level you are going to start with (i.e 500 etc), and I'll give you some good starting lists.
