In my mind, the primary advantage of corsairs over spearelves is the ability to take a magic banner. Sure, corsairs have twice as many attacks on offense. Ok, they are a little more resiliant to missle fire. However, they don't have improved S attacks, and missles that ignore armor still rip right through them. And if you want base combat resolution, DE spears are the best option any elf army has. First question: Is this analysis reasonable?
Second question: What is the banner of choice to equip corsairs?
Not like the DE are spoiled for choice here. I'm thinking the war banner is cheaper than fielding 5 more elves for outnumber bonuses. The soul shadows standard would enable them to function like dark riders, and still countercharge when enemy units fail a charge against them. The banner of murder is another fun option, but if I have this, I'll probably give it to CoKs. Or should I field them with no banner?

The war banner is a solid choice for them. Decent price and gets you some extra guaranteed combat res - something elven infantry can have difficulty with (particularly vs high armour targets) at times.

Well you are pretty close but In my opinion you missed something very valuable. In your mind to take the magic banner is 1 of their prime benefits but I believe they are really there to give our nobles a safer core rank and file unit. The extra protection vs shooting and a stronger charging offense with a noble alows us to have a better chance vs a tougher unit. Then as you mentioned the magic banner. This allows the nobles group to have another advantage vs the tougher hand to hand units.
usually if im taking corsairs its because im putting a noble or highborn with it. Its suprising how well this unit can do with a decent kited out hero or lord and the proper banner that supports your hero is taken with it.
As for what banner, the Warbanner is your general defualt choice and its something that you can never go wrong with. For the part on taking a banner for your hero set up would be the banner of murder if you have something in which striking first will make a big diff, ex gauntlet of power, draich of dark power or even the crimson death. You need the charge so the banner is much better then the warbanner in my opinion. If you are playing a more defensive stlye hero such as the shield of ghrond + something it isnt as important since u are less likely to lose your hero on the charge and if u lose a few men the warbanner +1 combat res will back your defensive play up.
This is just how I play and it works fairly well in the majority of my dark elf games. I hope this helps and if you have any another questions just post away or even private message if you like my advice.
I have to agree that its the Warbanner.
Taking a squad of 20 corsairs is really a bit too expensive, so you can just take a squad of 15 & a warbanner. The banner makes up for the lack of the 3rd rank and costs literally half the points. You also dont lose that bonus when they take a casualty. (Not to mention you dont need to buy anything for an upgrade like a banner, whereas the back rank will cost you 2 blisters).
Sure its a bit of a disadvantage for outnubering, but taking 20 corsairs isnt really a viable option anyway.
As a rule of thumb, I either take 20 spearmen with shields & a standard or 15 corsairs with a standard & warbanner. (and a champ depending on if theres a character)
You were right that the standard of slaughter is better suited to a unit of CoK's.

If you take 15 corsairs and a warbanner you still lose CR even if you take one casualty.
Something to consider. People talk about taking a warbanner to make up for an extra rank, but why not have the extra rank and the warbanner. Might cost a few more points but it helps you in a number of ways. Firstly it gives you an extra rank and also preserves CR if you take casualties. Secondly it gives you the chance of getting the outnumber bonus, people always seem to forget this for some reason. Obviously if you can get combined charges off it is less of an issue, but things don't always go to plan in WHFB, and there's no harm in erring on the side of caution^_^
Despite the fact that the corsair is slightly more expensive than spearmen they are still a solid core choice points wise.
A unit of 20 with full command is only 40 points more expensive than a similiar sized spearmen unit but they have sea dragon cloaks, the extra offensive attack and the ability to take a magic banner (the war banner, as afore mentioned, is the best option).
I love corsairs simply because they still have a chance, however small, to save against handgunners rotten armour piercing shots.....And they look fairly cool as well!!

agreed, id still go with 20. or if i needed to squeeze a few points id run them 6x3 with the warbanner. this will get you 2 more attacks which is pretty healthy.
very popular unit to drop an assassin in if you're fielding one.
