I'm thinking of starting a somewhat different DE army, I want it be loosely based on a raiding party landing on a shore pillaging nearby villages etc.
So out of the question are,
To be honest, cold ones should be on that list too but they're too damn cool to pass up on.
Also, the monsters are of course out of the question.
Think it's possible to come up with a competitive list? Haven't got anything yet, so I was thinking 1000 pts.
Yeah, Dark Elf raiders is a fairly common theme. In fact, if you look in the codex, they have even created a special scenario, where you are restricted to using units which fit the raiders theme.
However if you want to do it, Corsairs are a must. I'd take 2 units of 15-20. Also Dark Riders. 2 units of 5 with crossbows.
Cold One Knights might not fit the theme particularly well, but theres nothing stopping you from using them anyway.
Maybe Shades would fit the theme a little better than harpies
An asassain could add a bit of flavor to the list too. It adds to the whole 'sneaky & fast striking' theme.
I think a good idea is to make some custom scenery which add to the feel. Perhaps some landed row-boats to place at the edge of your deployment zone, to make it look they are just disembarking from their fleet. Or something like that..

Thanks for the info. By the way, is it possible to omit both harpies and dark riders in a 2000 pts army? Harpies don't seem to fit and I dislike the dark rider models..
you should clarify if you want raid theme as pirates or more like mongols.
for pirates then corsairs, shades, boltthrowers are pretty much made for the theme but also harpies will fit in as there trend to be vultures or eagles flying along with ships tio feast upon dead passengers and garbage. for characters noble/highborn with seadragon cloak is a no brainer... sorcs are up to you, I like the idea of sorcs filling the role of sea witches and seers to the pirates.
I'd avoid anything mounted on a pirate themed army, the only exception might be a dark pegasus for your army general. But in general mounts and boats just doesn't fit.
for "mongol" raider themed army these units will fit pretty well: rxb warriors, shades, dark riders as mongols was very known for both their shooting and their riding skills. I've found that executioners and CoK fitts in to some degree. The mongols were a fighting tribe so weaponmasters should be pretty common and them mounted shouldn't be an exception. Another unit that just might fight is the black guard as they are expert weapon users and doesn't fear the enemy just like the mongols, maybe they can act as bodyguards for you general. For characters use nobel/highborn and tool them as aggressive as possible. Assassin... maybe if you like, but I like to think that assassins are more of the elite and are more likely be used by characters that have a higher position than simple raiders. Magic are hard to fit in to the mongol theme as they don't beilve in the strength of man (elves ) rather than magic.
If you wanna use witch elves and assassins you should do a inquisition themed army. Pretty much a highborn/noble on foot as general and stick him into a executioner/black guard unit so they can act as "hencmen". Sorcs as other chars as they acts as "priests". assassins will fit in as well as inquisitors wont hesitate to use such methods to kill his enemies. And these units are suited for a inquisition theme: Warriors (both spears and rxb), witch elves, chariot, Cok, executioners, black guard, cauldron of blood, boltthrowers.
Units to avoid are generally monsters... don't know why I just don't feel they fit in and that follows beastmaster and to some degree corsairs (man theme wise they only fit into pirate armies >_<), and for some reason dark riders... not quite inquisitor like for me
but anyway that's just suggestions and leads... it's really your imagination that sets the bar on your raider theme. I think you are too "look dependant", if you don't like the look of dark riders and harpies then do something about it. The most common conversion for harpies is to use daemonettes. And I use Glade Riders as dark riders... it's easy to ad a cloak with green stuff, file away the leafs and mailorder rxbs to replace the bows, and they look very nice.
It's easy to add a "raider" touch on models... just model some cloth with greenstuff. I have converted raider looking CoKs, Warriors and executioners and it didn't take that much time.
With the right amount of imagination and some greenstuff you can use any unit in the armybook.
Many thanks for that exhaustive answer zhaf, I certainly need to sit down and decide which way this build should be going. Yep, might be too look dependant and I'll follow your advice and have a look at units in the other armies that might make the grade. The idea of Glade riders acing as dark riders is bloody genious. Many thanks for that one.
