I'm considering options for the expansion of my DE army to 2K. I'm wondering about the use of a flying character. I really like the idea of an elf flying around menacing things on the battlefield. There are 3 options I'm considering:
Beastmaster w/ Dark Pegasus: Cheap, expendable. comes in at just over 100 pts. with all gear, can spend a little on magic items. 1 hero choice.
Beastmaster w/ Manticore: terror causer, decent damage. Large target (I think?). 2 hero choices. 240ish points with equipment.
Noble on Pegasus: equiped with deathmask, heavy armor, shield, lance, SDC. terror causer, decent damage, 1 hero choice, approx. 200 points.
I think the noble on pegasus is superior to the beastmaster on manticore, I just can't see a place where the manticore is superior. The BM/Peg. combo would be preferable for low points games, while the noble/peg. would probably be better for large games. I prefer to avoid a dragon-mounted lord because of its expense, and I'd rather have a relatively expendable flyer.
For reference, my 1k army has 1 sorceress, 20 spears, 20 corsairs, 5 dark riders, 5 CoK, and a RBT. I've also got 6 harpies, another RBT, and some more spears lined up for the expansion.
Well the only reason to ever take a beastmaster is to take a manticore. A beastmaster on pegasus is more or less an utter waste compared to what you get for just 30 points more. (The extra stats, ability to take heavy armor, ability to take a shield, extra magic item, etc.)
That being said, the only real advantage to the beastmaster is that he CAN take the manticore. A noble on pegasus is a fast harasser and hunter, perhaps a terror causer with the deathmask. The manticore rider though is US5, and thus can break ranks, and can usually do enough damage to win a side combat. He's just sooo vulnerable. 4+ save vs shooting, 5+ in combat, and no save on the manticore itself. He needs to be used carefully.
So it all depends on what you need in your list. If you need things to hunt war machines or mages, stick with the noble on peg. If you want something with a little more rank breaking ability, go with the manticore.
