I realize we've had a few BSB conversations in the relatively recent past, but I'm not seeing much in the way of specific equipment discussion. So rather than necro-ing an old thread, I thought I'd start a-new.
I'm thinking that a BSB on a dark steed, with heavy armor, sea dragon cloak, and the blade of Rhuin would be a pretty good addition to my army. Respectable in combat, especially in a unit (so someone else can accept challenges) and against Knights and/or dwarves. + 1 static combat resolution and the chance to rack up a few kills against heavy armor opponents.
My army is going to have a lot of warriors and dark riders, 1 lvl 4 sorceress and 1 lvl 2, and some other stuff. A BSB might help significantly when stupidity keeps my heavycav/chariots outta close fights.
Model-wise I'm thinking of just grabbing the standard dark-rider command model with the cavalry saber, and adding a greenstuff SDC and a back banner with the COK bannerhead. Simple conversion, but I think it'll look pretty decent.
Whaddya think about both equipment and model?
you could put him in dark riders but that makes him a prime target for shooting, and well DR cant stand to be shot at. This may be the only time i would ever ever recommend taking black guard. They make the perfect bodyguard for the BSB, stubburn rerollable on breaks and not gonna run away or be torn up shooting either. So dark riders = nono.
when equiping him i would say use no magic banner witha heart stone of darkness, heavy armor, and sea dragon cloak.
but the most fun with him ive had was giving him a hydra banner, within cauldren of blood range for frenzied,a nd sticking him in a executioner squad. Lets just say those clan rats didnt see it coming :x
Recently, I've had a lot of fun putting a BSB into a chariot and giving him the warbanner. Given the opportunity for a flank charge, he will break just about any infantry unit there is. As long as you're careful not to let people live to hit him back, he can dish out tons of pain.
What I usually do is have my general noble in one chariot armed for combat and the warbanner BSB in another. The combination can break almost anything. That extra 2 to CR is totally unexpected by most people, and is very good at tipping combats further in your favor. Also, chariots are very likely to be near the bulk of your army anyway, (as they don't operate well alone), and so the BSB reroll power is highly effective.
The Hierarchy Chaotica: Kinky Sex > Change > Disease > Blood
98% of the population actually believes these stupid statistics. If you're part of the 2% of humanity with a brain, put this in your profile.
I usually equip him with a Life-taker (that's the magic x-bow, right?). He would skulk around the main combat units, making sure they all stayed within 12" and that he still had clear shots at annoying enemy skirmishers, terradons, censer-bearers, ratling guns or whatever. It's not so safe now that individuals can be targetted.
I wouldn't put him with Blackguard as has been suggested- they're just as prone to enemy shooting as anyone else and they're too expensive to use as bullet stoppers. I use them as flankers and enemy unit blockers while I set up flank charges- the number of times a single Black Guardsman has held up an enemy unit is a source of my great pride in them. I rate them much higher than Executioners.
No more NG spearmen, thanks! Now I need some pump-wagons!
Thanks a lot everyone for the responses so far!
If I knew I wasn't facing cannons, the chariot would be a lot of fun. so I may well use that against my regular HE opponent.
i would say no to black guard being flankers, with a bsb and stubburn ld 9 they can hold a unit for a flank set up better than anyone else in the dark elf army. I gave up completely on spear blocks for flank set ups (and its been much better since then). Chariot is also a nice option i would recommend it. (i dont do it cause i like to unseen lurker my chariots into large regiments to soften them up on first or second turn!!!)
what i did in a recent game was i gave him the deathmask/scary face item. his cavarly tried to charge, failed there test and ran away
best thing my spearmen have ever done:yes:
although it wouldnt be so good for a take all comers list as alot of armies can be immune to phycology. not us tho, the most twisted vile sadistic beings on the face of the planet still run away from a few guys in ghost costumes.
I consider the BSB's best use to be bolstering your core centre.
Any decent DE list will have a centre of atleast 2 unit of 20 spearmen or Corsairs.
These are the backbone of your army. They hold things still while you flank them.
They can also be a weak point if your opponent has some really hard hitters (Bret Knights, Ogres, chariots etc).
So, giving them a BSB simply for the re-roll break tests bolsters their staying power significantly. (see my votewar army in the army list section for an example)
I think the best set up is to not give him a magic banner, most of them are too expensive and/or not very useful, so keep him cheap. Give him heavy armour & sea dragon cloak for sure.
I think Malekith1337's set up is a good defensive one if thats what you want.
I have a different frame of mind though. To me, offense is the best form of defence. I'd rather give him a weapon to cut down things before they strike him, than risk it on a 50/50 chance of a 4+ ward.
Also, you are paying a reasonable amount of points for a character. So with no weapon, ALL of those points are simply for getting the Battle standard.. Giving him a decent weapons like the Sword of Might, means you are getting both the Battle standard and making use of his good stat line.
Along with any wounds he does, which contribute further to combat resolution. (he should get 1-2 kills). Also gives the unit some high strength attacks, which makes them more versatile. If spears get into comabt with dwarves or ogres tec, S3 is nothing against T4 & 4+ save or better. Having the Sword of might in there atleast gives them something that can hit back.
