At first glance the assassin looks like one of the best heros to have around. Give it alot of attacks with killing blow or poisons and suprise you enemy. But ive found that when it comes to actually using him in combat its not that imrpessive. Usualy after the first attack he ends up being the victim of no saves and a weak toughness. Pluss for the points im paying for the assassin i can buy a fighting lord. So im wondering why cant we see them turned into a 3 man rare squad instead of costing you a hero slot. so her's my idea.
M6 WS7 BS5 S4 T3 W2 I6 A3 LD10 unit size 1-3 60pts/model Weapons: hand weapon, throwing daggers(8in range)
+1 hand weapon 4pts/model
poison hand weapons 5pts/model
Repeater xbow 10pts/model
Hate High Elves, Skimirshers, Scouts
im still debating on giving them the Hidden rule
So for the M, S, T, W, A and LD i didnt see much point in changing there stats. The only real changes come with there BS, WS, and I. BS9 in a word to me is "stupid". you have a group of guys with the best BS in the game in an army whos main weapon is a repeater Xbow but the only weapon they can take is a magic weapon that auto hits on 2+. Lowering there BS to 5 seems decent. WS 7 is still prety high to me but i wanted it to reflect there assassins traning. Id still be willing to see it taken down to 6 for a cheap point cost. I10 seemed a little over the top so i figured giving them the same I as witch elves would be fine.
So any ideas or thoughts on this. I'd like to hear what everyone has to say, maby a change like this will make the assassins more desirable to use.
No-one would take them as a Rare choice since Bolt throwers and Hydras are fairly popular. Plus a unit like you describe, would get totally annihilated by any amount of shooting.
Theres nothing wrong with the character assasain, its just that he cost WAY too much once you take the upgrades (which are more of a neccessity than an option).
It needs to be about 40 points cheaper. Basically his base cost is how much he should cost AFTER the upgrades.
Or be given an extra ability to make him more survivable & worth the cost..such as a ward save, or something like disappearing back into the unit on a 3+ after he has struck, thus avoiding retalliation.
The other problem is that the Dragon & Manticore can take up Hero slots.. Plus you always need atleast 1 Sorceress, so there often isnt room for an assasain.
I think Dark Elves need more room in the Hero slots, maybe by stopping dragons & manticores from taking up a slot (better to make them a 0-1 choice), or by making Sorceresses not take up a slot if they are only level 1 or something.
Unfortunately he's not the only wasted/useless option the book (Beast master, Cauldron, Black Guard, and most of the magic items).
You really just have to wait like the rest of us for the Dark Elves to be re-released, and hope they fix such glaring problems.

I don't think the Cauldron or the Black Guard are glaring problems. They are very fluffy and could give your army an aesthetic touch. Plus I think Black Guard are great anyway
Drop the crossbow option. Dark Elf assassins are not supposed to be shooting people - for a start it would be a monumental waste of points. All models in the game have a BS value for the sake of convenience, it doesn't mean they need the option of something to shoot.
DE assassins have a high BS because it's representative. They aren't supposed to use it, it's there to demonstrate they have mastered all aspects of fighting even if some of it does not fit with their role as an assassin (who by their nature would always be getting up close and personal to "guarantee" the kill).
Having an army and not owning a rulebook is like owning a car with no steering wheel.Originally Posted by amishcellphone

I like the hand weapon and shield idea, but the fact remains that they are only str 3. Black guard abilities are well worth the points cost, its just that some people would debate that they have been given the correct abilities.....I love the models for black guard but find they are way to brittle in combat, the lack of weapon options makes them very killable with their toughness of 3. Maybe if they could choose to fight with hand weapons and shields (and have halberds as an option) they may stay alive longer.
Personally i like them.
As for the assassin, i agree with Rork. The WS and BS is purely representative just as it is with shadowblade and numerous other models in the game. I.e. Why do chaos warriors have a BS??
But, that being said, i also agree with Manu_Forti in that the assassin should be cheaper, he is a great character, useful and intrinsically dark elven, they do need the option of taking throwing stars or something like skaven assassins can.......that or a sniper rifle, :w00t:
