Hey all, I'm roghly new to fantasy and for some reason wanted Dogs of War as my first army. Dunno why, the mercenary appeal and variety of units just got me, and I didn't want to be fielding hordes of dwarves who all look pretty much identical...
Paymaster w/ Crossbow, shield, heavy armour, - 71 points
Wizard Hireling w/ lvl2, dispel scroll, dispel scroll - 145
Marksmen of miragliano w/ 2 extra marksmen - 202
6 Ogre Bulls w/Ironfists, light armour, standard bearer and bellower - 288
10 Duellists w/pistols and musician - 100
Dogs of War Giant - 203
Total - 1009 points.
So, whatcha think?
Paymaster w/ Crossbow, shield, heavy armour, - 71 points I would mount him just for the extra armor, important to keep alive
Wizard Hireling w/ lvl2, dispel scroll, dispel scroll - 145 Fine
Marksmen of miragliano w/ 2 extra marksmen - 202 I know these guys are cool, but I'm sorry THEY ARE TOO MANY POINTS. Hate to break it to you. For 200 points u can get 25 normal crossbowmen. Moreover, the unit comes with a banner which sucks to have on shooting unit...100+ Victory points for the opponent. I'd drop this unit and go for 2 x 10 crossbows for 160pts. You want them to be cheap and expendable.
6 Ogre Bulls w/Ironfists, light armour, standard bearer and bellower - 288 Don't field bulls, they aren't really worth it...for ogre kingdoms go for A. Maneaters B. Leadbelchers C. Ironguts. 3 x Maneaters is 270 pts...the unit has 14 attacks at strength 5 and 7 AND has stubborn as well as immune to psychology. Ideally here, I'd say go with a block of pikemen or dwarfs though
10 Duellists w/pistols and musician - 100 Fun unit, but I prefer fast cav, 2 leadbelchers might also work well...
Dogs of War Giant - 203 I think its 205 points. I don't know if I would personally field giant in 1000, but up to you
Total - 1009 points.
The army lacks any solid anvil type units..the giant can provide a little bit of this, but it would be good to have a tough ranked unit. I know you said you hated dwarfs...but they are an excellent choice if you just go one 20 man block. They don't all look identical, especially the new stuff.
Well, the reasoning for my design is pretty much this, I should've mentioned in my initial post...
The Paymaster I wanted to keep sat with the Marksmen, so he couldn't be picked out. Look Out Sir is way more reliable to me than a mount, as that way a good spell could slap him apart.
The Marksmen I do understand your reasoning, I know a lot of people hate the price - but I often find that the extra ballistic skill really does make that much of a difference, as does the increase in leadership Max provides. Plus, they can charge if necessary and act as a fairly reasonable combat unit with max there. I will consider using regular crossbowmen however, but I just tend to have very bad experience with leadership - once even lost about 20 regular crossbowmen to a starscream arrow on the first turn.
Wizard is there to try and fend off the hordes of magic that will inevitably drown me.
The Ogre Bulls are actually genuinely effective, they hit with enough force to win a combat on the first turn very regularly. I am considering the other Ogre Kingdom models, though Ironguts is one I'm wary of, less numbers can mean more psychology tests and they're just as vulnerable to shooting as regular ogres. I chose these over regular pikemen due to the pikemen failing quite often - they couldn't do enough damage despite their immense number of attacks, often bouncing off targets and struggling against fear and terror causers. The Ogres have this advantage of causing fear, and being S and T4, which makes them a better choice. I will seriously consider Maneaters though, will just have to check their shooting vulnerability.
The Fast Cav. I haven't got any, but I do like the idea of them. Thing is the duellists with pistols tend to pull off a lot of decent attacks and can shoot anything like monsters down with significant reliability. 2 Leadbelchers is a no because they'd get shot to pieces and thus cause panic.
The Giant's awesome, he can be a bit vulnerable at times but he doen't half put the scares up people and terror is always nice to have.
The thing is I've tried a block of dwarves before, but they move too slowly to be able to realistically initiate the charge and don't hit hard enough to really make up for the losses they can encounter.
I suppose I should've mentioned that my regular opponents are Chaos Daemons, Dark Elves, Tomb Kings and Wood Elves. There's a lot of immune to psychology and Fear-causing going on there, and many a time has leadership shattered my army. I needed units that can grab the charge, as taking it isn't something that works quite as well as it should considering what pikemen have. Tomb King Archery is a nuisance, and my giant technically benefits from not giving modifiers to them, but I need to field things that can't be outmaneuvered or broken easily.
I might try the dwarven block... but they've not performed brilliantly before.
The DoW heavy cavalry is not too bad for a strong mounted "hammer"
I am also considering a DoW Army to go with my VCs and O&Gs.
