My heroes are there for support. I realize my guys could take out a chaos lord without lots of luck, so Imade them cheap and flexible. My army has lots of units I can flank, bait or draw charges with. Plus, I have number of hammers including my dwarve,s ogres andbearmen. Bearmen are disgusting!! You have a lord level character for free in that squad, combined with frenzy and their +1 to hit banner . . .woow!! My army is designed with mobility, stability and hard hitting in mind. If it helps, I have played VC, Chaos mortals and Brets before in fantasy.
Make sure you are taking Ironguts, not just regular ogres, the better armor save and impact hits as well as improved leadership are well worth the extra 3 points.
RRGuard are great as far as pikemen.
Bearmen are expensive and have frenzy, so becareful.
The dwarves are expensive and really slow, so they may fall behind and get isolated.
I'm not sure, how you plan on using them. You could get the Norsmen with heavy weapons for a lot cheaper if you know how to use the frenzy right. Instead of the halfings, you could give 10 dwarves crossbows and sit them up on a hill. They can shoot until attacked and then with some heavy armor and shields, they'll stay around for a while still.
Bronzio's Galloper Guns - if you flee, you're not shooting and you may run off the table and then you can't shoot the next turn if you rally. You might as well get the regular cannon. You can get 2 of them for nearly 100pts less than 2 galloper guns. They are cheaper and stronger.
After looking at Beorg again, even though he is expensive, I think he could be used well in an army. I'm not a fan of Str 3 attacks, even if you get twice as many (these guys are exactly the same as empire swordsmen, except they suffer from Frenzy), but Beorg, if you get the charge off could do some damage against a low level character. I wouldn't pit him against a lord level in any army because, basically he's like a poor man's strigoi, without the ability to cast spells or have the extra ward/regeneration, still, if you put him up against a regular ho-hum unit and challenge, he should get some serious overkill on a champion. The Banner is sweet - I'll admit that.
Yeah - like Dave said, try the crossbowmen. Set of 10 on a hill. Or if you have lots of points you could deck out a unit of Dwaves with the crossbows, heavy weapons, shield heavy armor and let everyone come to you.
