I would like to make a DOW army but the cost is rather prohibitive. Unless I use plastics and convert or play "counts as"...
Pikemen - empire spearmen converted with longer weapons. Bretonnian men at arms could also be converted.
Crossbowmen - empire militia
Duellists - empire militia
Heavy Cavalry - empire knights or bretonnian knights
Light Cavalry - ???
DOW Ogres - Ogre Kingdoms Ogres
DOW Dwarfs - Dwarfs regiment box sets
Norse marauders - chaos marauders or empire militia
Paymasters bodyguard - empire halberdiers or brettonia peasants
Halflings - empire militia (?) (counts as)
Cannons - empire cannon (although this is probably too big, could it be sawn off to make if shorter and still look ok?)
Halfling Hot Pot - ??
I really hate the empire spearmen models and want to make good looking pikemen.
Has anyone also made bret men at arms into pikemen? does it look good?
If I had bret pikemen and empire cavalry, would that look odd? The bret peasants have big roman noses and missing teeth etc.
Also, are the models the same scale? This might sound like a silly question but my imperial guard cadian plastics are much bigger and taller compared to metal (older) mordian models.
Finally, Empire militia appear too often in my list above. Does anyone have any other substitutes or ways of making each unit look different enough from the other units?
Chaos Marauders would have to be rebased (They come with 25mm, but DoW Marauders are on 20mm)
For Paymaster's Bodyguard, I'd use Empire Halberiers converted with Heavy Armour (if you're going to give them HA, that is). Bret Peasants are just too miserable-looking to be the guards of the second-most-important (or most important) fella in the army.
Nah, if you play DoW and put an Empire Cannon on the field, just about all players will accept it as a Light Cannon.
For light cavalry, how about Marauder Horsemen?
Use Light, Beasts, Metal instead of Heavens
NecroLords: Use at least one Death Mage
Brets: Use Peasants&Damsels
Skaven: Don't use Skryre SAD
To convert my light cavalry i used pistolier legs and horses with militia bodies. I know this doesnt save much money but they look good.... You could also try mounted yeoman, as they fit the bill... Unfortunatly most of the available options arn't cheap..... Sorry
For much of my dogs of war army, I used Old Glory figures. Their swiss line (search for PIS-02) have pikemen that work perfectly for warhammer. Their figs are extremely cheap too. They come in bags of 30 for like $29! They also have crossbowmen that are just as good as GW figs. Also, the figs are pewter and have 7-8+ poses. They also have some cannons and stuff to use. Their site is a little confusing to navigate at first, but you'll get used to it.
I don't think light cav are easily plasticated. Even if I mail ordered some horses and legs, and use militia bodies that is still expensive on the militia because I'll be wasting heaps of legs.
In your experiences and what you've seen, is it possible to make DoW on a budget and make it look good and cohesive. Or will it end up looking like empire bits and bobs thrown together. I guess to answer my own question is that it comes down to how well I model/paint them. But at the end of the day if a paymasters bodyguard only uses pieces normally used to make empire halberdiers then they will look like halberdiers. Is there a good way to swap heads etc to get different looking units from their normal box set arrangements while also not having too much wastage. I mean I don't want to buy sets just to use certain torsos and the rest comes from the main set etc.
why not try wolf riders as light cavalry? that would be different.
