I'm wanting to start Dogs of War, it looks like real fun. The main problem I am having though is about "Count As Units" that actually look good for the role. For example, I wouldn't use ironbreakers and say that they are crossbowmen. I want to find models that fit the role well, and the other thing is if the model is available in-store. The one I'm really having trouble with is the Paymaster, Duellists (vespero's vendetta, but I cannot order online), Pikemen, and Crossbowmen (I've got Dwarves I'm thinking of using, but then my opponent could argue is that they are actual dwarves from the list with the option for crossbows, but they are 4 more points more than I want to spend for crossbows).
Thanks in advance too.
Well, I'm painting up my full DoW force at the moment and here's
what I've been using while I finish the painting. These are all friendly
Xbows - dark elf xbows.
Light cavalry - dark riders and/or Bretonnian squires
Duellists - Empire infantry with the correct weapon (milita with pistols
Paymaster - I use one of the empire militia with a 2-handed sword and
a big coat! Anything that looks reasonably close should do. Depends on
whether he's mounted or not, I suppose!
Norse berserkers - chaos infantry.
I'm currently using a Dark Elf repeating bolt-thrower for my cannon!
As long as you don't have anything too confusing in place of one of
the units I'm sure you'll be ok.
I was thinking of using Maurader Horsemen/Mauraders for Light Calvary/Norsemen (respectivly).
What Empire Models come with pistols? And I was thinking of using a DE Executioner or a Kislev Boyar for a paymaster.
Thanks for the help though.
Glad I could help!
The plastic dark dark elf warriors can be made as spearmen or xbowmen. There
are 16 in a box, I think.
You can get xbowmen from the Empire Free Company box - the same one that
has pistols in it - so you can get 10 xbowmen and 10 pistol-armed duellists
from one box (unfotunately, you only get 10 of each in the box).
Yeah marauder horsemen look good if you're using marauders as Norsemen too.
Duelists and xbows are easilly made from the free company box.
For pikemen I have my own custom recipe, which is:
2 empire command sprues
1 empire knights sprues
These come to 16 dollars and will give you 6 pikemen, so you can get a full unit of pikes for under 50 dollars. (considering one extra command sprue for actual command). They look great, and they don't require any annoying conversions for spear lengthening.
For light cav I'd use glade riders and maybe some spare human heads so they look less like elves. These are by far the cheapest appropriate models.
Heavy cav would be empire or brettonian knights of course.
As long as you want a "human" DoW army, I would suggest wargames foundry:
Welcome to the Foundry website, makers of the finest and largest range of small metal cast models for gamers, collectors and painters
they have a lot of models that are warhammer scale that can be mounted on 20mm bases.
They also have a huge selection. For DoW, you could do a German looking army, or Italian (more true to form), or Spanish (which would be like an Estalian army).
The models are entirely metal, so the army might be a bit on the expensive side (particularly considering how cheap most of the models are).
I've actually considered making an Estalian army using the DoW rules and miniatures from the foundry.
For your paymaster, the Bretonnian Cav box has some useful bits. There is a sheathed sword with some keys dangling from it, and also a small chest that is from there or from the Men @ arms box. I've slapped both onto a mounted model and he looks reasonable paymastery. If you know some bret players, ask them if they have any leftover bits for you.
Since mounted models now fit in infantry blocks with no being shot at penalty, I see no reason why a paymaster shouldn't be mounted. Better armor, and better mobility for his break reroll.
For pikes, you might want to wait and see. I've heard rumors that the empire will get them. Empire spearmen can also be converted to extend their spears.
Arena of Death Champion: Nexim of the Guldskullz Tribe. Fear my wrath!
Sorry for bumping this thread but, a thought just occured to me that I have never thought of, ever.
Does anyone know any LOTR models that would work for pikemen (or anything for that matter, but I would definatly like pikemen)? Or could it even work to begin with.
e/ The Minas Tirith Citadel Guard look pretty good, just need to elongate those spears.
