10 pts for 4 ranks, always fight first, +1 st against calv?? seems ridiculous...elves are almost as much and get far less bonuses
really? how do your units survive charging them? with 20 attacks back it seems like anyone who did so wouldnt last too long, plus if they're next to a general or in the middle of a battle line?
Pretty simply. WS3 and S3 are their downfalls (what can you say, they're only human). Against my Dwarfs they'd hit on a 4 and wound on a 5, that pretty much cuts down on any chances of Dwarf casulties.
Anyway its representative of what pike blocks do, as Fideru and David have pointed out the drawbacks are the human basic statline- in 'real life' you wouldnt charge a pike block full on, but they are vulnerable to flank charges and have poor armour saves- shoot them full of holes, as they are human they will probably panic after all.

DoW pikmen vs Empire Swordsmen.
Keep in mind that the Swordsmen are almost half the cost.
20 attacks. 10 hit. 5 wound. 2.5 are saved by armour.
Thats 2.5 wounds.
The swordsmen will hit back and cause 1 wound.
The swordsmen will outnumber and the combat will be about even.
Really not so tough. Put them up against anything with T4 and suddenly they become very weak.
cavalry also have the high armour (usually) to mean that they will save most of wounds caused. I find pikes arn't great against cavalry, that might be because the only cavalry i face tends to be bretonnia lance formations. *shudder*

I personally wish there was a greater variety of pike weilding models. It was a very common weapon in history and I for one would relish being able to use it. Dwarven Ironbreakers with Pikes, now that would be just sick.
aut viam inveniam aut faciam / I'll either find a way or make one.
You should also take into account, that they only get the 'first strike' rule in the initial round of combat. In consecutive rounds it's just regular initiative order, and they have only an average initiative of 3.
Besides, all special rules for pikes are only valid for fighting an enemy in the front direction, so if you happen to whack them in the side or rear they get no 4 ranks fighting, no first strike and no bonus strength.
Not to mention shooting at them (and should you happen to have one of those armies with no ranged weaponry, just whack some magic missiles into them)
It ain't easy bein' green... :-)
