After a few ages of indecision over what should be my first army for Warhammer (It's not fair. 40k has only about 3 armies I really want to get, while Warhammer has 8!), I finally settled on, yes, Dwarfs. It's strange, I like pretty things that are creative and fragile, but there's something about those stubborn stubby legged suits of armour with impressive beards flowing out from under the helm. That, and thanks to Dark Elves, and a lesser extent High Elves, I imagine there's enough pointy eared pretty boys on the tables right now. (Ooooh~ innuendo!)
Regarding Dwarfs, it's my current belief that a slow moving wall of heavily armoured close combat with some long range support to encourage my oppenent not to linger in the back. Of course, that's a general idea, sort of vague, but it's not like I'm presenting a list for tournaments right now. Basically I'm just musing if this slowly evolving list should be suitable for most armies.
That is to say, the following is hardly intended to be a perfect list, rather a list based on what I could slowly buy and paint, and hopefully be a decent foe in the battle bunker.
Yes, pure CC, and not a single missile unit. I suppose what I'm hoping for is that, for 1k lists, I don't need to worry too much about being outmaneuvered, with the Grugni Banner to keep my troops in a fairly decent state. That, and thanks to the BfSP, all I need to worry about is getting a couple boxes of warriors or so, and a box of miners.
As for the miners, well, why them instead of, say, a cannon? I suppose I'm wagering that at such a low army value, those guys could cause a lot more chaos as well as claim table quarters than the warmachines.

Rune of Iron
After a few games of a pure CC army, I suppose I'll be more than ready to plunk down something that can reach out and touch some calvary. Why, however, would I settle for only ten Ironbreakers? Why not, say, more warriors? Or Hammerers?
To be honest, I rather prefer the Ironbreaker model over the Hammerer's. For 1.5k games, I suppose these shiny armoured dwarfs will serve as more of a distraction than a proper combat force, but... well, I want some. That, and I'd probably be losing more to my own newbish tactics than army builds anyways...

Finally, at the very end, 2k points, where hopefully after topping off my warrior units, as well as making my Ironbreakers a proper combat unit, I'll have a decent, balanced, and flexible army on my shelf. By 2.5k, I'm giving serious consideration to two full combat units of miners (which, yes, would be better served by having an anvil around, but that's for later consideration), given how I have the presumption that the reason why a few people tend to have such poor luck with miners is they simply toss them way off at the opponent's army without any support or plan whatsoever.
However, for 2k, a pair of expendable 8 miner units should do nicely.
I probably don't need a Runesmith at 2k, and yet, I can't help but think I just might need an extra power dice... maybe. At the very least, I would need to pick up a Runesmith sooner or later. I could always rework in a Thane if need be.
So, overall a good idea for building up a starting army?
I'd love to give you some advice but for the life of me I don't understand the "7X", etc. symbols underneath each unit selection.

Quannum, funkin' out in every way. Since 1987.
I believe 7x is 70 pts, 20x is 200 etc. Took me quite a while to figure it out actually xD
The thing you definately want is an organ gun, trust me, thats as much chaos as you're gonna get out of your points. It can blow up knight units in a single volley with a bit of luck.
and a runesmith is no luxery, with the ammount of powerdice enemies can get in the updated armybooks you will need every dispelldice you can get, and runesmiths can fight well too, better than enemy Im-wearing-a-robe-wizards.
Yeah, X would be the last digit blotted out, though I think next time I'll just leave it in. I doubt Games Workshop will be peering closely at the army lists going "AH HA! With a bit of clever division and substraction we can figure out that dragon slayer's original points!"
So, an organ gun (which is something I was musing on getting for the 2250 lists and so on, as well as Strollaz, but anyways), and I'm probably going to want some thunderers to add a bit of variety to potential army lists... that battalion box is starting to look halfway decent...
Now if only eBay was being nice to me instead of only offering painted armies, over retail price boxes, and a deluge of Skull Pass models)
