Alright let me start by explaining my position, i'm currently looking at a second army (i have tomb kings atm) and i have the skull pass dwarves kicking around so i'm thinking of adding a battalion to those. This list is made up of models from battalion+skull pass and is my first go at a dwarf list so i think my thane build may be abit off.

Any advice is welcome as i know very little about dwarves and may have made a bad list here. To boost to 2k i'd look at ither a second cannon or 2 bolt throwers, boost my longbeards/warriors to 20, second thane in offensive build, master engineer, 20 hammerers and 15 slayers

The list looks good for a first time one. There's only one thing i would recommend changing. The Thane is a bit overtooled for a game of this level. I would recommend dropping all weapon runes and just taking a great weapon at 1000pts. This will still give you 3 str 6 attacks instead of 4 str 5, which is nearly as affective. It only costs 4 points and you were pretty much going to strike last anyway, even with +1 initiative. Sometimes when you get access to all those runes its tempting to go a bit overboard on them. i know i did at the start!
That would give you 46 points to spend, which i would then use to bump your warrior unit to 20 for 45 points, giving a total of 1000 exactly.
Dwarfs don't really win combats by killing alot of enemy models (even with combat thanes), we tend to win by static combat resolution and being tough little buggers. Taking one higher str unit at this level means you have a better chance of this, and dont forget when you look at unit numbers that you are going to lose a couple to missile fire. Even one casualty robs you of that much needed rank bonus!
One thing to note when you are going up to 2000 points is that you want a battle standard bearer as you dont want you poor stunties to break from combat when they get charged by those heavy cavalry. I know you dont have to worry about that with tomb kings but dont forget our flee distance is only 2d6-1. There's nothing more annoying that losing combat by 1 and having your ironbreakers get run down when theres still about 15 left! I usually even take one in 1000 pts.

One thing that I would find the points to add is an Oath Stone.
In my opinion it is the best thing we have in games of theses point levels.
This is because one of your main worries will be getting hit hard on a flank, and thus lose your all important rank bonus. With an Oath Stone this isnt a worry (look at the Dwarf book again if you havent seen the rules for them)
Other than that its pretty decent. Dwarves dont need any extra magic defence at this size.

Thanks for the advice i guess my units are rather small, i may now be getting another set of skull pass dwarves and another unit on the cheap used. I'd have 2 thanes, 48 warriors, 20 thunderers, 2 cannons, 16 miners. I'm at work without an army book to reference so i'm not sure on point values but i think i could probably get to 2k with afew purchases.
Well i'm home now so here is my new 1500pt list using models i'm going to soon own.

In this list my BSB joins the longbeards to make them tough as nails and my general joins my warriors to add something that can hit first and hopefully score a couple kills. I'm not too sure if rune of slowness is the best for my BSB and i'm kinda toying with picking up rune of fear putting him in the longbeards (at double u.s) for a uber auto break unit.
