Just trying to get a feel for dwarfs, looking to start them soon and have devised a army for 1000 points, would like some opinions on it. as in am i thinking like a true dwarf or not.
runic weapon-master rune of flight
runic armor-rune of stone
thane- 100 points
battle standered bearer
runic weapon- run of stricking
15 dwarf warriors- 160 points
sheilds and hand weapons
15 dwarf warriors- 160 points
sheilds and hand weapons
15 dwarf warriors- 255 points
runic standard- master rune of grungni
5 hammerers 90 points
1 grudge thrower
even though i put this list together i am still not sure myself how best to use it and also what excactly does the battle standard bearer do since this army will be my first time using one.
cheers in advance.
It's not bad, the BSB allows you to reroll breaktests. In the new 8th edition ( coming soon, just a few weeks now! ) a BSB will allow you to reroll all leadership based tests! Fear, panic, breaking, rally, the whole bunch!
There are some things that need to be corrected to have an effective list though;
First drop 1 unit of 15 warriors ( - 160 ) you will need a few very solid units, and units of 15 aren't all that strong. Dwarfs rely on suffering as few casualties as possible, not inflicting them to win combat res. In 8th edition you will need more bodies to soak up attacks.
Buff the second warrior unit to 20 and buff the longbeards to 20 ( + 105 )
Drop the hammerers, only 5, they will be wiped out in a single round, also their command sucks up points and makes them very expensive for 5 models. ( - 90 )
Now some rune buffing!
Give your grudge thrower a rune of penetrating and rune of accuracy ( + 50 ) . In 8th edition stone throwers no longer require guessing the range, you place the template and roll the scatter. You will love the reroll. Also stonethrowers will become str3, armoursaves allowed, so a rune of penetrating to buff the strenght.
Your BSB will be public enemy #1, so give him good armour;
A master rune of gromril and rune of resistance for a 1+ rerollable save. In 8th edition we will strike on initiative, so a rune of speed can't hurt either. ( + 55 )
Use the remaining points to boost your thane, the master rune of flight is fun, but you are only str4. I'd try the following: drop the rune of flight , take a rune of cleaving, rune of fury and rune of might. ( - 40 ) ( + 70 )You are going to love that! If you won't face a lot of units/characters/monsters with T5 or higher, you can swap it for another rune like swiftness, snorri spangelhelm or another fury. The rune of stone is always good.
Total: ( -290 ) ( +280 )
That's 10 pts left. You can give your engineer on the grudge thrower a brace of pistols, and your thane a pistol. This is also 10 pts.
I hope these runic combo's help
The best thing of course is to try it out once and see what works and what doesn't.
thanks for the advice, i had hoped to keep the master rune of flight since i just ordered a modle that looks perfect for the jo, about to throw the hammer, i even called him thor! but i guess that should go on a lord and not a thane. i guess at this point level units like hammers and iron breakers are not worth, maybe at 2000 points?
the end list should have a warrior unit, a longbeard unit, two thanes and a grude thrower and yes your ideas are certanly differnt and now need to get the dwarf battilion or something.
You can still use the master rune of flight if you wish. The fun thing with our army is you can just change the runic combo's in your list between games and try out new things.
Master rune of flight with the rune of might can hurt enemy monsters, or when charged and there is a hero with T5 or higher ( scar veterans, ogres heroes, orcs, beastmen, tomb kings ) you can knock a wound off them by using 'stand and shoot' and throwing the hammer in his face.
Or the Master rune of flight with the rune of cleaving. It doesn't hurt as much against T5 opponents, but when charged, you just do 'stand and shoot' , and aim for his champion, kill him, so he loses an attack in the coming fight.
i cant wait to order dwarfs now, had a demo game today with the new rules, had a bit of a laugh as 50 night goblins gout smashed by 15 dwarfs, 5 dead dwarfs 40 dead gobbos!
using the dwarf battilion box what sort of army should i go for from that?
I guess you can build 2 blocks from that, and a unit of 10 missile troops. Use the remaining 6 models of the quarreler/thunderers to build some more warriors/longbeards to full up those 2 combat units. A cannon would be good, if you already have battle for skull pass you can use that cannon, and build an organ gun, which is awesome incarnate.
Do you already have battle for skull pass?
With 8th edition coming I've been following the chatter on bugmansbrewery.com , and I believe 30 warriors with great weapons is going to be nasty, because they throw out a boat load of str5 attacks, at ws 4. T4 and a 5+ save should keep the number of casualties relatively low.
no afraid i dont have the battle for skull pass, though i now wont be having the battilon set as well since i managed to get 59 dwarf warriors 11 hammers and the slayer king plus 2 cannons and an organ gun off of ebay with money left over to get a grudge thower and with the new rules and all i can field the lot!
by the way are slayers good?
Relatively decent, but they die very quikly because they're arrow magnets. They have a fearsome reputation as.. well.. slayers, and when facing an army of heavily armoured warriors, that unit of naked lunatics really attracts missile fire. If you get a good number in combat I think they can be good, with the 2D6 charge ranges that is more likely than before when we walked 6" , and attacking in 2 ranks makes their great weapons viable. But I would not recommend them, the chance is high most die before they reach combat.
A naked dragon slayer hopping about next to a unit of yours is always handy though. And he's unbreakable, so can tie up an enemy unit for a turn.
Good deal on the ebay buy btw. That will build you 2 units. One of 25 warriors, and 25 longbeards, 2 cannons and an organ gun provide great support. They won't kill a lot of rank & file, because cannons only kill a few men each shot, but they're great for killing.. well.. everything else. A grudge thrower complements that nicely. It is worth considering a box of 5 extra hammerers instead though, 11 won't do a lot because they strike last. Maybe a nice flanking unit.
A grudge thrower is fine though, will smash stuff nicely. Be carefull not to turn your army into a gunline however, you've got 4 warmachines with the grudge thrower.
sadly my long term goal with the army is going to be gunline, which is why i am getting flamer throwers and more ranged stuff, the warriors, hammers and longbeards are there to hit anythig that surrvives, got extra lucky and someone gave me an extra 16 warriors as a gift.
thanks for the advice by the way.
