I would just like to start off by saying that I have the Dwarf battalion, box of quarrellers/thunderers, runesmith, engineer with hand gun, lord on shield - I am trying to come up with a list that uses only the models for the time being.
The general set-up was created by a GW shop assistant, with me watching and trying to learn. (I filled in the details and tweaked it to get the points right). This is my first ever list, online and otherwise so any criticism (of I am sure there will be loads) is very welcome.
This list uses rules from the new Warhammer edition.
-master rune of steel
-rune of spite
-rune of stone
TOTAL - 279 pts
-master rune of balance
-rune of spellbreaking
TOTAL - 151 pts
17 Dwarf Warriors (Dwarf Lord and Runesmith to join)
TOTAL - 168 pts
15 Longbeard Rangers
-Rune Of determination
-Rune Of courage
TOTAL - 300 pts
TOTAL - 265 pts
TOTAL - 217 pts
-Rune of Reloading
TOTAL - 120 pts
OVERALL TOTAL: 1500 PTS

I will say it's actually pretty good.
The dwarf lord has the right equipment, nearly the same as mine in fact, I just have a rune of resistance too. Rerollable 1+ armoursave rocks!
He does not need the shield however. With the shieldbearers & rune of stone he has a 1+ armoursave and according to the shieldbearers entry he may not have a 0+ save via them. Also in the new edition you are forced to use your great weapon always. ( 3 pts saved )
The runesmith is fine, a bit fragile though. You magic defence will be excellent with the master rune of balance, you can stop there in 1500 pts. If he rolls the highest roll possible for powerpool, 12, then you will have 6 dice, +1 from your runesmith, +1 from the master rune of balance, and he -1 from the master rune of balance. Making 12 - 6 into 11 - 8! If he rolls a bit lower, the odds are good you will have as many or more dispelldice as he has powerdice! So you can drop the rune of spellbreaking, give him a rune of stone to survive better. ( 20 pts saved )
Warriors are Ok, maybe a bit small unit.
I'd advise against longbeard rangers in this army. You've got only 2 fighting units, it is unwise to deploy one far from your main army isolated, and leave your missile troops and warmachine protected by only 1 unit warriors. Also longbeards work much much better with shields. If you want GW troops, I suggest when building a 2000 pts army you take a unit hammerers, or very large unit warriors with GW's. Shields will do for now. I will get back to you on how to build up this unit, first we need to save some more points: GW's gone, ranger gone ( 45 pts saved )
The missile units can be units of 10 both, full command is generally not needed in missile units as they are not intended to fight. 16 is a large number, harder to deploy too. I do not know yet the new rules for commands because we aren't allowed to look in the new book But a musician can give a free reform I believe.
So drop 6 from each unit and the commands, except musician ( 202 pts saved! )
A cannon is not complete without the rune of forging. The rune of reloading is not necessary when you have that one. Also an engineer is generally not worth it on a cannon, but I won't deny you the use of your engineer model. ( 25 pts used )
Now to buff your longbeard unit:
You have saved 245 pts! First we will add a good number of extra longbeards. 8th edition combat is pure carnage compared to combat in 7th, so you will be wanting lots and lots of extra bodies. 15 is small, and after 1 combat they will most likely be thinned out severely. You do not need to buy new models for this, I know that would be annoying and I can't ask you to spend more money for my opinion. We removed 12 missile troops, and because the dwarf bodies from the warrior and thunderer/quarreler kit are ( nearly? ) identical, you can use those! With a mix of heads/beards from both kits however you desire. Give them shields & hand weapons from the warrior kit, there should be more than enough left from the 2 kits you used for warriors and longbeards.
There, that's 144 pts further, and now you've got 27 longbeards! A far more impressive unit. Your banner choice is fine.
There are still 101 pts left. In the new rules a BSB is immensely important, allowing to reroll all leadership tests. So let's do that, let's add a BSB!
Thane, battle standard, master rune of gromril: 115. Aw, we're a little over the points you have left. Not to worry. We just remove 2 longbeards ( 27 longbeards is a weird number, don't you think? ) so we will have 10 pts left. 10 pts, perfect for a rune of striking, or 2 runes of speed!
If you want your BSB to be more fighty, than I think you will need to look for points either on your longbeard banner ( rune of courage is always nice, but maybe not a necessity? ) , or the master rune of spite on your lord. You can drop the master rune of spite on your lord, replace it with a rune of resistance ( 1+ rerollable, yay ) and use the remaining 20 pts for a rune of cleavin' on your BSB.
I hope this comprehensive post helps you. I tried to make sure you can use the models you have All you need is a BSB. You can buy one, or convert one yourself from the 2 thunderer/quarreler/longbeard/warrior bodies you will have left ( if you took 25 longbeards. )
Edit: I just realised I forgot to take away the throwing axes of your longbeards. This is another 15 pts you have left. If you do not take the rune of striking on your BSB, you can have 25 pts for something else nice. A rune of might, rune of fury, the best I think is rune of resistance, maybe a rune of swiftness perhaps? He will work well, if you replaced the MroSpite for a rune of resistance on your lord, so he already has a rune of cleaving. It's good to have str5!
Thank you very much with your swift and full reply.
I will start amending immediately.
I am glad to have helped. That's what I am for To help new dwarf players with a solid list.
I made a little adjustment to my post. I did not realise I hadn't removed the throwing axes yet.
15 pts left, if you altered the lord's equipment like I suggested your BSB can have a rune of cleaving, and of you drop the rune of striking on the BSB ( the rune I sugested earlier for the 10 pts you had left ) then you can take another good rune; might, fury, swiftness, snorri spangelhelm, resistance, etc.
