Hi all, first post at these forums but I am on several others (bolter and chainsword i use the most).
So with the release of 8th edition I have been drawn in to start a new army (I do have lizardmen but i love to start a fresh new one). The army I have chosen are the almighty dwarfs. I presume most new people to dwarfs go with gunline lists (I would as it is similar to my tau army) but I have done a fair bit of research into this with how effective it will be, 8th edition changes and money. So here we go then:
Dwarf thane with Pistol, Rune of cleaving, Rune of stone and Rune of Brotherhood - 115pts
He will be explained with the quarrellers
Thunderers*10 Musician - 145pts
A simple bolster of fire power to support the combat troops and dwarf handguns are +1 to hit if I remember correctly. Musician is there for the free reform.
Quarrellers*10 Full command, Rangers, shields and Great weapons - 155pts
A nice harassment unit to shoot at the flanks and at enemy war machines and lone wizards and anything else hanging in the rear playing field. These units usually get charged if the opponent want to completely get rid of them (a poor decision if you don't). So they charge the unit to find an angry dwarf thane kitted for combat. This will tie up an enemy unit for several turns or even overcome them with the addition to great weapons.
Dwarf Warriors*25 Full command, Great weapons and shields - 300pts
This unit is the only combat orientated unit but it is a big one. They should be able to over come most enemy combat units with plenty of bodies and great weapons. They may be used to defend the war machines or more likely to support the thane and his units or simple charge headlong.
Bolt thrower with engineer and rune of penetration - 85pts
Bolt thrower with engineer and rune of penetration - 85pts
Two bolt throwers are nice and cheap for small point games and a pair of these with the upgrades can be quite brutal. There really isn't else much to say about them.
Organ gun 120pts
A devastating weapon which can create kill zones, refuse flanks and just damn scare your opponent half to death. They could be covering the dwarf warriors as it can whittle down the enemy to make the dwarf warriors job alot easier.
So this comes to 1005pts, the people I play usually go a little over and none of us mind but at tournaments I will remove the musician from the thunderers.
For 1500pts I would remove the shields off the quarrellers and then add the following:
Runesmith with master rune of spell binding, rune of stone and a shield - 127pts
Well there will always be enemy magic so why not
Dwarf warriors: same as first one but only 20 - 245pts
Much needed combat troops. Both blocks of troops will stay together and charge into the thick of it while the thane and miners (next) will flank and harass
Miners*10 full command - 135pts
A nice flanking unit to support the thane
So what do you think of the two lists. I think the list works well in most situations. The 1500pts may not have powerful enough characters though and the 1000pts list doesn't seem to have enough combat potential. What do you think though as I am not too sure?
Any and all advice would be much appreciated, cheers

First off mate welcome to the dwarven halls. Now i had a huge long reply detailing each unit but my tinternet went awol as i pushed reply so i lost it all! So here goes (kind of) again, just shorter...
First thing to remember is that unlike a tau gunline we arent as maneuverable to avoid trouble and are much better in CC (I play Tau also). second thing is with new charge ranges our opponents can now be across the table and risking a charge on turn 2 if they are quick (elves/ogres/cavalry).
I'd give the Thane a shield also to get his armour to 2+ and maybe a r or resistance also, otherwise hes going to go down fairly quickly to attacks. If you want to stay cheap and cheerful just take GW, crossbow, R of stone and R of Brotherhood. Gives a bit more CC punch and you have same range as rest of unit. Try and find some points to get a BSB with MR gromril/r of resistance also
The warriors could probably come down to 20 models and you can probably drop the shields to give you a few extra points.
The Bt's..ah my favourite in 7th. Unfortunately with no guess ranges anymore cannons have become that much more useful, especially as they also hit mounts and riders also. you only need ten points to give you two. Of a cannon and grudge thrower. On an additional note your BT rune setup is illegal. It violates the rule of pride (Dwarf army book p43). You cannot have the same combination of runes twice in your army, even adding a 5pt R of burning gets around this. An organ gun is pretty much standard (you cannot attach master engineer though. It doesn't use BS!)
On the 1500 point list have a look at dropping both combat blocks to 20, drop the shields, make one longbeards and get the MR of grungni. Its much more useful against shooting. You can no longer choose to use the HW and shield option on the warriors in CC, you have to use the GW. I'd scrap the engineer for BT's (75pts just for +1 BS?) and even with the cannons you could afford 2 x r of forging and one burning instead.
Hope this helps, sorry its short and choppy. I lost the longer one. But dont forget its only my opinion. Try your own list out for a game or two and see how it does. Even if you lose I find I learn alot more about my lists and tactics from games where i get beaten than games where i win!

hey there, thanks for responding to my thread.
Adding a shield to the thane would be useful and it is cheap so i'll do that.
Shouldn't warriors have shields for added protection against shooting attacks? Also larger unit may be needed for added survival but I'm not too sure on that matter as I haven't played an 8th edition game (I will be doing so next friday with my lizardmen)
I think your right about the Bolt throwers (shame though) so the cannons are the way to go then.
Long beards seem nice to have but I'm not to sure whether they are worth it, I could get a Battle standard bearer and place him in a large block of infantry to use that 5+ ward save (which does seem better now rather than shield but maybe both?)
On the actual purchasing though, I may get two battalions and an extra cannon to get two cannons and a organ gun. this will give me alot of troops which are vital in these games. So I could get thunderers, rangers, warriors and even long beards if you think they are worth the extra points. I will still keep the thane as he is and the runesmith aswell. I will add a battle standard and then work out the points from there.
Just one final thing, what about the grudge thrower with the accuracy and penetraion runes? I think it would work, especially from large blocks of cheap infantry.
Anyway, I will work out another list tonight based on your views and see where it goes.
