Runesmith w/ GW, MRoBalance, RoStone = 129pts
10 Thunderers w/ shields, Musician = 165pts
10 Thunderers w/ shields = 160pts
10 Longbeard Rangers w/ GW, Throwing Axes, FCmd = 175pts
1 Cannon w/RoForging, Roburning = 130pts
2 x Organ gun = xxx
The basic premise of this army is to shoot the enemy to bits before they can even touch me. This is why i brought 2 organ guns and one cannon over the opposite as i want to use the organ guns to cause mass casualties and the cannon for sniping considering there shouldnt be a large amount of things desperately needing cannonballs applied to their faces in a 1000pt game. Runesmith over a thane because I wanted that magic defence over hitting power, especially considering it's not a combat army. The LB Rangers are in there as a unit that can actually strike back with some sort of power and even if I deploy them in my deployment zone it gives me a chance to react and place them where they'll be needed (whether to guard my warmachines or my thunderers)
Tell me what you think guys
I've not really played low point games, so I don't know the environment in 8th. But I do like quarrelers with great weapons more than thunderers. I like the 30 inch range, the S5 attacks, and they're cheaper than thunderers. You already have 2 organ guns that'll chew through heavily armored units, I'd rather have either more shots with further range from crossbowmen, or the same number of shots but a strong close combat unit. That way you probably won't even need the longbeards, and could just either use regular dwarf warrior rangers or even more quarrelers! I'd go with dwarf warriors though, so you can have more of them. That's what I think though, good luck!
Like Mumm-Ra said, I think quarrelers will do beter then thunderers and if you give quarrelers GW then they fight as combat as good as normal warriors with GW. It could be fun to use quarrelers rangers instead of your longbeards, this way you can shoot from a little closer. What is RoStone (can't find any rune of stone).
rune of stone gives a +1 to your armour save. i definitely hear what you guys are saying about quarrellers but thunderers won my loyalty just for their reliability. Dwarfs only have average BS and the +1 to hit in my eyes works wonders. Regardless I should be play testing this list today and I'll tell you how it went
So I playtested the list today. It was Dwarfs vs Dwarfs which made my runesmith a huge point sink and seeing as he threw the list together then he just took a thane and no RS. Didn't really mind though as it was a pretty friendly game. he had a unit of GW warriors, ironbreakers, 10 thunderers, a cannon and a grudge thrower. The organ gun and thunderers both performed spectacularly but having good target acquisition is not my strongpoint. I tended to just shoot at whatever was in front of me instead of targetting the ironbreakers with the thane. I wiped out the thunderers, warriors and later the cannon with shooting. The store had to close for lunch when we had his grudge thrower, lone thane (ironbreakers killed off by shooting and combat) and my LBs musician and standard as the only models left alive so we gave the win to him. It was a really fun game though and could've gone either way, especially if my organ gun didn't misfire with the thane standing directly in front of him. I think when I kick it up to 1500pts I'll take a grudge thrower, thane and a lot more of the rangers, possibly w/o throwing axes as they weren't very effective.
Did you feel like you needed more numbers? You could always just make the rangers a bigger block of regular warriors without the throwing axes. Sounded like it went pretty well though, so awesome. You playing some kind of escalation? Maybe try a unit of quarrelers with a unit of thunderers, and maybe 5 miners to eat up their war machines? You'll save some points not using long beards, or at least not using throwing axes. I would personally try as many different units as I could to play test them all and see what works for me. Good luck man!
