So, I've tried a few dwarf shooty lists and think maybe they are too powerful. So I'm trying a CC list. I'm playing lots of orcs and 1 bretonnian army, and maybe others. I need some thoughts on my 3rd core choice, but here's what I've got so far. All costs are approximate, as my book isn't in front of me. Please give me some feedback, I'm afeared of a stompin!
Thane - general - stuff ~= 110pts. suggestions on how to equip him? Gt wpn & 1+ save?
BSB Thane - Banner of +1 within 12 inches, Strollaz Rune =240
RuneSmith - 2 dispel scroll runes = 120
20 warriors, shield, full command - 205 pts.
20 longbeards, shield, gt wpn, full command, anti-shooting std - 315 pts.
3rd core - maybe x-bow rangers?
16 slayers = 176
16 hammerers, shield, full command, banner-Rune of courage = 268
10 miners - 110 pts.
2 gyrocopters - 140 each.
This puts me at about 1824 pts. I need to add 1 core choice, I'm thinking x-bow rangers, to give me something to shoot at giants with. I like the BSB, but he is VERY expensive. I feel a little weak without a character-killing lord, but if I have a pricey BSB, I need a cheap general. But I need at least one character with a little combat oomph. I'm also toying with a bolt thrower with the explodey rune, to lure off some fast cav and let me shoot at giants/chariots/knights.
A lot of people dislike the expensive +1 banner, but it affects 4 dwarf units, and only requires me to drop 10 dwarves (2 ranks). Seems reasonable to me.
Slayers, Longbeards, Warriors, Hammerers, Table Edge.
Longbeard banner protects all from shooting, BSB rides along with warriors to start, drops back in combat. Rangers, Miners, and gyrocopters deploy as needed. General probably in with the warriors, Runesmith adds oomph as needed.
Please give me some thoughts!
A couple of bolt throwers wouldn't go amiss i feel. You will still retain the cc theme. I just like bolt throwers with dwarfs. Give em an engineer and the right runes and they can take care of just about anything.
Dwarfs are very good at shooting and i think you should still play to this strength somewhat. Taking maybe a unit of thunderers and a couple of bolt throwers will hardly have people waving their arms in the air yelling "gunline".
These are just my general musings though
Yeah, both bolt throwers and thunderers are awesome. I'm not worried about people screaming GUNLINE, rather I'm trying to create a marchy dwarf army.
EDIT: Now I'm really getting enthused about a couple bolt throwers at the middle of the table to blow the heck out of anything sneaking around my flanks. The rangers could be deployed to protect them, or go mess around in the enemies lines. BUT, i'd have to drop the +1-to-everyone-in-12-inches banner-rune. Any thoughts on that tradeoff?
I'd save some points if I drop the great axes from the longbeards, OR had 16 longbeards and 20 hammerers.
I'm also thinking about the Rune that makes everyone take a test or not charge. Could be a VERY nice addition to my speed-dwarves, enabling them to charge things and prevent coordinated charges against them. What do people think about these changes, or others?
